The Foreign Trade Department of the Ministry of Commerce said that the international status of a country's automobile industry can basically represent the overall international status of the country's manufacturing industry. the automobile manufacturing industry is also an important indicator of a country's industrialization, economic strength and scientific and technological innovation capability. At the same time, the automobile industry is also one of the industries with the highest degree of globalization and the single manufacturing industry with the largest export value in the world. As a commodity with high technology, high added value and easy to reach trade scale, cars are an important driving force for trade growth in Europe, the United States, Japan, South Korea and other major countries, and play an important role in promoting the growth of global trade in goods.

In 2018, the vehicle exports of Germany, Japan and South Korea were 182.3 billion US dollars, 108.5 billion US dollars and 40.8 billion US dollars respectively, accounting for 11.7 per cent, 14.7 per cent and 6.7 per cent of all domestic goods exports respectively, while China's vehicle exports accounted for only 0.6 per cent of goods exports. far lower than the global level of 5.1%.

According to the statistics of the World Automobile Organization (OICA), the global automobile output in 2018 reached 95.7 million, of which China's automobile output reached 27.8 million, accounting for nearly 30% of the global output, while the total vehicle export in 2018 was 1.01 million, accounting for only 3.6% of the domestic output, which is seriously inconsistent with the size and strength of China's automobile industry, indicating that China's automobile export is still in its infancy.

Cognitive gap. The report points out that with the rapid development of China's automobile industry, the quality of domestic automobile products has improved significantly, and the scale and efficiency of automobile exports have increased steadily. The whole vehicle export is mainly Chinese brand car enterprises, which has a certain competitive advantage in the fields of economical passenger cars, trucks, large and medium-sized buses and so on. However, compared with the major automobile enterprises in Europe, the United States, Japan and other developed countries, the overall development time of Chinese brand car enterprises is short, the mastery of key core technologies is insufficient, the ability of technology research and development and management is not strong, and the international operation level and brand influence need to be improved. Foreign brand car companies in China are still mainly to meet the needs of the domestic market, and the export power is insufficient. As a result, there is still a big gap between China's automobile products export and Europe, America and Japan in terms of scale and proportion, added value and profit margin, export mode and market layout.

Specifically in terms of exports, the "report" points out that most of the export models of Chinese brands are concentrated in the middle and low end, and the export unit price and profit margin are lower than those of foreign brands. And the export mode of most of China's automobile enterprises is relatively single, the export of Chinese-brand passenger cars to European and American developed countries is less, and developing countries are the main export markets. However, in recent years, the export of China's automobile products has grown rapidly, and the proportion of the export scale of automobile products in China's foreign trade and its share in the international market are gradually increasing.

With regard to the current product competitiveness of China's automobile industry, the report talks about several main conclusions:

First, from the comprehensive evaluation results of the international competitiveness of the automobile industry, the international competitiveness of China's automobile industry has exceeded that of South Korea, and there is still a certain gap compared with Germany, Japan and the United States.

Second, from the specific indicators that constitute the comprehensive evaluation index of the international competitiveness of the automobile industry, the domestic market scale, domestic market share, cost level and price level are the indicators with significant advantages in our country.

Third, according to the evaluation of export competitiveness of automobile products based on export data, although the export competitiveness of Chinese automobile products has been improving in recent years, it is still at a low level.

With regard to the advantages and potential of the high-quality development of China's automobile trade, the report lists the following points: 1. China has formed a world-class automobile manufacturing system with an industrial foundation for large-scale export; 2.
