Today, foreign media reported that the German Volkswagen Group will acquire a 20% stake in Chinese electric car battery maker Guoxuan Hi-Tech Co., Ltd., so as to accelerate its development of electrification in China.

As soon as the news came out, the share price of Guoxuan Hi-Tech quickly rose to 10%. If the news is true, it means that this is the first time that Volkswagen directly owns a stake in a Chinese battery maker and will become its second largest shareholder. However, in response to this matter, Guoxuan Hi-Tech Council Secret Office staff said that so far no news has been received about the above-mentioned equity acquisitions.

According to public information, Guoxuan Hi-Tech Co., Ltd. was established in 2006, mainly engaged in power lithium batteries and power transmission and distribution equipment two major plates. Among them, Hefei Guoxuan is mainly engaged in power lithium battery business, Dongyuan Electric Appliance is mainly engaged in power transmission and distribution business, of which power battery business accounts for 89% of Guoxuan Hi-Tech. Data show that in November 2019, the installed capacity of Guoxuan Hi-Tech ranked among the top three domestic power battery companies, second only to Ningde era and BYD.

In addition to discussing cooperation with Volkswagen, Guoxuan Hi-Tech is also working with Ford, General Motors and other international car companies to carry out core product design, verification and other work. Domestic cooperation car companies also have Jianghuai Automobile, Chery New Energy and other cooperation.

As early as April 2019, Guoxuan Hi-Tech revealed that it was in talks with "first-tier international brands", but did not disclose further details because of the confidentiality agreement signed. Until August of the same year, there were media reports that Volkswagen planned to invest in Chinese power battery suppliers, especially those with electric vehicle technology, and was examining a number of potential companies. China Xuantech Power Energy Co., Ltd. is one of the targets.

At the time, Volkswagen did not confirm the report, but said in a statement that it was discussing possible cooperation with a number of local suppliers.

In fact, in the context of Volkswagen's efforts to promote electric vehicles in the Chinese automobile market, power battery technology is very important to Volkswagen, and as the main component leading the electrification transformation, localization cooperation will greatly reduce Volkswagen's costs.

According to Volkswagen's plan, the company has increased its future investment in electrification to $66 billion (464.1 billion yuan), an increase of 36% over its previously announced budget, and Volkswagen will launch 75 electric models by 2030. Among them, the Chinese market is called by Volkswagen CEO Disi as the market that will determine the success or failure of Volkswagen, it is obvious that the localization of the supply chain is very important to Volkswagen.

In November last year, SAIC-Volkswagen officially announced the completion of its new MEB platform factory in Anting, Shanghai, as well as the trial production of its first ID family model. It means that Volkswagen Group is ready to enter the new energy market and will enter the electric era from now on, and the acquisition of Guoxuan Hi-Tech will also boost its rapid development in the electric field.
