AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)01/19 Report--
According to foreign media reports, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it would begin reviewing a petition asking NHTSA to formally investigate reports of Tesla's sudden unexpected acceleration and asking Tesla to recall 500,000 vehicles with hidden dangers.
The petition, which includes Tesla Model S models produced between 2012 and 2019, Model X models produced between 2016 and 2019, and Model 3 models produced between 2018 and 2019, cited numerous media reports of unintended acceleration of Tesla electric vehicles, including 123 complaint reports involving 123 Tesla vehicles, 110 crashes, and 52 injuries. The complaint reports that when owners try to park Tesla vehicles in garages or on the side of the road, these vehicles suddenly accelerate, which can lead to crashes if it happens during traffic or when driving assistance systems are used.
Tesla has not commented on the petition, and NHTSA will decide whether to launch a formal investigation after evaluating the content of the petition.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time Tesla has been questioned for safety hazards.
In May 2019, Tesla had spontaneous combustion in many places. Tesla did not recall the spontaneous combustion incident, but upgraded its battery management software to eliminate safety hazards. In September 2010, NHTSA received a petition alleging Tesla had a safety hazard that could cause fires. In October 2019, NHTSA said it was evaluating whether Tesla should recall 2000 electric vehicles with safety hazards instead of upgrading battery software.
In addition, NHTSA has launched an investigation into a fatal crash between Tesla and fire trucks on December 29, 2019, which they suspect activated the company's so-called Autopilot or other advanced driver assistance systems.
Tesla's recently released fourth quarter 2019 Auto Safety Report shows that Tesla electric vehicles that start autonomous driving systems have an average of 4.91 million kilometers of accidents; Electric vehicles that do not start autonomous driving systems but use active safety features have an accident every 3.36 million kilometers; Electric vehicles that do not use autonomous driving systems and active safety measures have an accident every 2.62 million kilometers. However, according to data released by NHTSA, an average of one car accident occurs every 770,000 kilometers in the United States. In contrast, Tesla shows much safer data, and now Tesla's frequent safety accidents have caused consumers to have some doubts about Tesla's data.
