2019 European car brand sales ranking: Volkswagen Peugeot Renault is in the lead, the Japanese system is bleak

2019 is a thing of the past, and the sales data of car companies are a foregone conclusion. In the Chinese market, Volkswagen, GM, Toyota and Honda have performed strongly over the past year. And how will the major car companies perform in the European market, where car consumption is more mature?

Passenger car sales in the EU and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) were 15.8058 million in 2019, up 1.2 per cent from a year earlier, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA). Among them, the growth rate in December was relatively large, reaching 21.4%, which ensured the growth for the whole year. As a result, 2019 European passenger car sales also reached their highest level since 2008.

According to the sales data of the major automobile groups sold in Europe, Volkswagen Group, PSA Group and Renault Group ranked in the top three, among which Volkswagen Group took the lead with obvious advantages.

In 2019, Volkswagen Group's sales in Europe reached 3.8668 million vehicles, an increase of 3.3% over the same period last year, with a market share of 24.5%. Its Volkswagen brand, Skoda, Audi, Seattle and Porsche all grew.

PSA Group ranks second only to Volkswagen Group, with sales data of 2.467 million vehicles, down 1.3% from a year earlier, mainly due to a decline of 7.8% in Opel / Vauxhall sales, which is also the second largest brand in PSA Group. Peugeot sells 965000 vehicles, Opel / Vauxhall 816000, Citroen 636800 and DS 50, 000.

Renault remains the third-largest carmaker in Europe, with sales in the region of 1.655 million vehicles in 2019, up 0.9 per cent from a year earlier.

Hyundai Group, BMW Group, Daimler Group, Ford and FCA Group have all achieved sales of about one million.

The performance of Japanese car companies in Europe is not strong, in sharp contrast to their performance in the Chinese and US markets. Toyota Group sales of 797000 vehicles, up 4.8% year-on-year, ranking ninth, its Toyota Motor, Lexus have achieved growth. Mazda grew by as much as 9.4%, with sales of 256600 vehicles, while Mazda 2, Mazda 6 and CX-5 grew in terms of models, while the new model CX-30 provided increments.

Nissan and Honda fell sharply, with Nissan falling below 400000, or 20.2%, and falling in October throughout 2019, with performance getting worse.

Honda has a lower share of Europe than Mitsubishi and Mazda, with sales falling 10 per cent year-on-year to 122000 last year. December was Honda's only month of growth in Europe, with sales falling for all models except the CR-V. Based on the current market situation, Honda announced the closure of its car manufacturing plant in Swinton, southwest England in 2022; based on the market strategy, Honda plans to phase out all diesel vehicles in Europe and switch to electric vehicles by 2021. In fact, Honda has been underperforming in Europe, accounting for only about 2.5% of Honda's global sales.

In terms of brand analysis, the Volkswagen brand is far ahead in Europe, with sales of 1.77 million vehicles, ahead of the second-placed Renault with 700000 and Renault with 1.06 million.

The top 10 also included Ford (965000), Peugeot (965000), Mercedes-Benz (902000), BMW (830000), Opel / Vauxhall (816000), Skoda (762000), Audi (743000) and Toyota (741, 000).

The three major French brands that have underperformed in China, Peugeot, Citroen and Renault have all achieved good sales in the European home market. Korean Hyundai and Kia scored 560000 and 500000 respectively. Luxury brands Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi ranked higher, ranking fifth, sixth and ninth, respectively.

Japanese brands underperformed China and the United States in the European market, with Toyota ranked 10th, followed by Nissan at 17th, Mazda at 19, Mitsubishi at 23, Honda at 24 and Lexus at 29.
