Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup truck was officially launched at the end of 2019, targeting the high-end pickup market. This Mercedes-Benz pickup, which is based on the same platform of Nissan Navarra and Renault Alaskan, has not won market recognition. It is about to stop production and withdraw from the market for more than two years due to poor sales.

According to foreign media reports, Mercedes-Benz official spokesman revealed that Mercedes-Benz has decided to terminate the production of X-class pickups in May. The reason is that in the recent model evaluation of Mercedes-Benz, the shrinking market and the continued downturn in sales eventually led to the termination of the model.

The launch of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class is mainly aimed at Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Europe, and does not enter the Chinese and American markets.

Mercedes-Benz X-Class pick-up trucks, built on the same platform as Nissan Navarra and Renault Alaskan, were originally planned for dual-line production at Nissan and Renault plants (Nissan in Barcelona, Spain and Renault in Cordoba, Argentina). But it was later found that the Argentine plant was terminated in April 2019 because pickup consumers in South America were not financially prepared for other problems such as the Mercedes-Benz X-Class.

Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup has many similar elements to the other two. The front grille of Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup still maintains Mercedes-Benz's latest family style, and the huge Mercedes-Benz LOGO in the center looks domineering with double banner hollowed-out chrome strips.

In terms of interior design, officials also admit that the car draws lessons from a lot of V-level design elements. The external body of the Mercedes-Benz X-class is 5340/1920/1819mm in length, width and height, and 3150mm in wheelbase.

In the power system, the Mercedes-Benz X 200 is equipped with a four-cylinder gasoline engine with a maximum power of 166 horsepower and a peak torque of 238 Nm. The Mercedes-Benz X 220 d and X 250 d are equipped with four-cylinder diesel engines with maximum power of 163 horsepower and 190 horsepower respectively, and peak torque of 403 Nm and 450 Nm respectively. The transmission system matches the six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission (only the X 250d model). Among them, X 220d and X 250d can also be equipped with 4MATIC just-in-time four-wheel drive system (non-four-wheel drive models are rear wheel drive). It is understood that the maximum load of the car is 1042kg, and the traction capacity is 1650-3500kg according to the power.

Mercedes-Benz then launched a top-of-the-line X 350d model with a 3.0T V6 diesel engine with a maximum power of 258hp and a peak torque of 550Nm, matching a 7G-TRONIC PLUS gearbox and adding a full-time all-wheel drive system. Mercedes-Benz has also revealed that the V8 version is also under consideration, depending on the needs of the market.

Due to the positioning of the high-end market, the price threshold of Mercedes-Benz X pickup is higher, with a price range of A $50400-A $79415 (RMB 234000-369000) in Australia, which is much higher than that of Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.

Poor sales are at the heart of the car's discontinued fate. In terms of sales, a total of 2186 Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickups were sold in Australia in 2019. For comparison, Toyota sold 47759 Hilux vehicles in Australia and Ford Ranger sold 40960 vehicles in Australia in the same year. In the global market, the sales of Mercedes-Benz X-class pickup trucks are not satisfactory, more than two years on the market, a total of 32000 vehicles have been sold.
