Under the double impact of the epidemic and the decline of the overall car market in 2020, the domestic automobile market has suffered an unprecedented decline, with retail sales down 40.8% in the first three months compared with the same period last year. But at the same time, Tesla, a new energy car company that has just entered China, has achieved a growth trend for three consecutive months, rising 161 per cent in March from a month earlier.

According to the latest data from the Federation of passengers, Tesla's domestic Model 3 model sold a total of 10160 new cars in China in March, up 161 per cent from the previous month. Even though most car companies have seen a month-on-month increase after the domestic market suffered a huge decline in the overall car market in February this year, judging from the monthly sales of domestic Tesla Model 3 models, this is a performance of domestic Model 3 models achieving month-on-month growth after reversing the trend growth in February.

Compared with other car companies in March to stabilize the situation, the Tesla brand is to achieve sustained upsurge. Among them, the domestic Model 3 reached 2620, 3900 and 10160 in January, February and March, respectively. It can be seen that the performance of Tesla models in China is very outstanding, due to the performance of the vast majority of car companies. The February sales also let it occupy the top 10 of the car market, high-end model market and new energy market, so it is believed that March will achieve the first place in the new energy field.

After all, when domestic Tesla's sales in China were not taken into account in January, when the auto industry was down 20.4% from a year earlier, sales of new energy narrow passenger vehicles were only 41000, down 57.9% from a year earlier and 68.4% from a month earlier. The decline is much larger than that of the passenger car market, which also means that the performance of the new energy market is far worse than that of the fuel market.

With the impact of the continued spread of the epidemic, China took corresponding anti-epidemic measures in February, causing car companies across the country to enter a "standstill" state, resulting in passenger car sales only reaching the level of February 2006, with cumulative sales of 250000 vehicles, down 78.7% from the same period last year and 85.4% from the previous month, which also led to the biggest decline in China's auto market in history.

However, as the Federation began to take into account the sales of domestic Tesla models in February this year, the new energy vehicle market has reversed, although there has also been a sharp decline of 69.5 per cent, a month-on-month decline of 65.1 per cent, but significantly better than the domestic passenger car market. This also means that with the development of the domestic Tesla market in China, it has achieved the trend of driving the domestic new energy vehicle market.

Wholesale sales of new energy passenger cars in March were 56000, down 49.2% from a year earlier and a four-fold increase from February. Of this total, plug-in hybrid sales were 9200, down 59 per cent from the same period last year. Wholesale sales of pure electric vehicles were 47000, down 48 per cent from a year earlier. It also shows that Tesla models have accounted for 20% of the domestic pure electric models.

With the rise of Tesla models in China, it will also have a greater impact on domestic new energy car companies, including new power car companies. According to the latest sales figures released by BYD, the largest new energy vehicle company in China, sales of new energy vehicles fell 59.52% year on year to 12256 units in March 2020, only slightly behind Tesla, but Tesla is only the sales of a single model.

In response to Tesla's expectations for the future, Li Li, ideal car of New Power Automobile Company, also believes that with the launch of Tesla's ModelY model, the company may achieve global sales of a single model of more than a million vehicles in 2020, and win the global intelligent electric vehicle field 2Rose 30% of the proportion. Even with the development of time, Tesla will be able to reach 5 million-10 million annual sales.

Of course, the current performance of the Tesla brand in the global market is also gradually proving this phenomenon. According to the report of Tesla, Tesla produced 103000 electric vehicles and delivered 88400 new cars in the first quarter of 2020. Production increased by 33% year-on-year, and delivery increased by 15% year-on-year.

In addition, it is reported that Tesla plans to expand its product line in China as early as this week by launching a long-range Model 3 sedan with a comprehensive range of more than 650km and a starting price of about 350000 yuan (excluding subsidies), but the exact price has not yet been determined.

With the reduction in the cost of Tesla's models in China and the expansion of production, it will also allow its sales to continue to grow and expand Tesla's share in the domestic new energy vehicle market.
