Retail sales in the national passenger car market reached 1.045 million units in March, down 40.4 percent from a year earlier, according to sales data from the Federation of passengers. Retail sales in the national passenger car market totaled 3.014 million from January to March, down 40.8 per cent from the same period last year.
In terms of market segments, car sales fell 42.0% to 497000 vehicles in March and 42.4% to 1.443 million vehicles in the first quarter compared with the same period last year; MPV sales fell 47.8% to 68000 vehicles, and cumulative sales in the first quarter fell 50.3% to 184000 vehicles; SUV sales fell 37.4% to 479000 vehicles, and cumulative sales in the first quarter fell 37.4% to 1.387 million vehicles Sales of new energy narrow passenger cars fell 48.8 per cent to 54000 in March from a year earlier, with cumulative sales falling 56.1 per cent in the first quarter compared with the same period a year earlier.
From the perspective of the major market segments, although the vast majority of models still show a downward trend, but due to the resumption of production and sales in March, it is not difficult to find that some models have achieved year-on-year growth in March.
There was no big change in the top three car sales rankings in March, with Lanya, Xuanyi and Bora still having a small increase, with sales up 9.1 per cent to 19352 vehicles in March from a year earlier. It is worth mentioning that last month, Tesla Model 3 ranked fifth in the car list with sales of 3900 vehicles, but sales of 10160 Model 3 vehicles fell out of the top 10 in March this year, mainly due to simultaneous sales growth of several models in March. In addition, there is only one autonomous model in the top 10, and Geely Dihao's March sales fell 48.7% year-on-year to 10697, ranking 10th on the list.
In the SUV model sales list, the ranking has changed greatly, mainly due to the competition between the mainstream SUV and not to be outdone. According to the previous ten lists, the top of the SUV list is still Harvard H6, although it is at the top of the list, but it has been declining for many months.
By contrast, Changan CS75, in second place, saw its sales rise 29.0% year-on-year to 17583 vehicles in March, just 1508 cars away from the Harvard H6. Changan CS75 is just around the corner to catch up with the Harvard H6. In addition to Changan CS75, Changan CS35 and Auchan X7 are also on the list. Of course, the biggest highlight of the list was BYD Song, where sales rose 363.7% year-on-year to 14444 vehicles in March. In addition, Japanese Toyota RAV4 Rongfang and Honda CR-V also squeezed into the top 10.
Wuling Hongguang remains the most adamant car in the MPV sales list, with March sales falling 25 per cent year-on-year to 23383, less than other MPV models and 15515 more than Buick GL8, which ranked second. In addition, Baojun 730,360 and Baojun RM-5 are also on the list, but the decline is relatively large.
As for new energy models, Tesla Model 3 topped the list with sales of 10160 vehicles, becoming the top seller of new energy vehicles in March and the only new energy vehicle with more than 10,000 sales, while BAIC's EU series, which previously topped the list, fell to third place, with sales down 65.7% from a year earlier to 4450. In addition, BYD has two models on the list, BYD Qin EV ranked second with 5066 vehicles, and BYD Yuan EV ranked sixth with 1901 vehicles.
Although sales declined seriously in the first quarter of this year, with the resumption of work and production and the gradual introduction of major policies to stimulate car consumption, domestic passenger cars are expected to return to the same level in the second half of the year, and sales of those competitive models will gradually pick up, or even achieve a counterattack.
