On May 5, Volvo released its global sales figures for April, which fell 43.8 per cent to 31760 vehicles in April and 24.9 per cent to 163649 units from January to April due to continued demand in Europe and the US.

On the whole, with the exception of growth in China, other regions have declined to varying degrees. At present, the Chinese car market is in a state of recovery, and the resumption of work and production led to a 20.8 per cent increase in Volvo's sales in China in April to 14724 vehicles, and a cumulative decline of 15.6 per cent to 35504 vehicles from January to April. Volvo's sales in other regions fell last month as the epidemic continued to spread outside China and strict blockades were imposed in many countries. Among them, sales in the US plunged 53.8 per cent year-on-year to 3866 vehicles, while sales in Europe plunged 66.8 per cent to 9283 vehicles. Volvo's cumulative sales in the two regions also fell by 23.3% and 30.3% respectively in the first four months of this year.

In terms of models, Volvo SUV models continued to sell well in April. The XC60 was Volvo's best-selling model, with 10908 vehicles sold in the month, followed by the XC40 and XC90, with 5708 and 4425 respectively, but the S60 was Volvo's only model with sales growth. The best-selling model from January to April remains the XC60, with a cumulative sales of 47838, followed by the XC40 and XC90, with 39976 and 22752 respectively.

At present, after entering April, Volvo's sales in the Chinese market began to return to the growth trend, but the situation in overseas markets is still not optimistic, and European and American markets are still the hardest hit by the epidemic. Last week, Volvo announced that it would cut 1300 white-collar workers in Sweden, and the exact number of layoffs will be negotiated with unions in the coming months.

The company said it needed to accelerate the shift to new products and new business models in the context of the epidemic. Quarantines and travel restrictions in response to the epidemic have put pressure on car sales and layoffs have become more urgent. The spread of the epidemic overseas has forced carmakers around the world to stop production in response to the rapid decline in demand.

Volvo's sales in China have continued to break new highs in recent years, but sales have fallen sharply due to the COVID-19 epidemic, and even if growth has resumed in April, it may not be so easy to break through again in the Chinese market.
