Autopilot is a big selling point of Tesla, attracting many consumers to choose Tesla, but after all, assisted driving is assisted driving after all, can not completely replace the driver, some accidents happen, often consumers do not realize this point. On June 1, a video of Tesla crashing into a large truck overturned in the left lane of the highway quickly spread online, raising questions about the safety of Tesla technology again.

According to the high-speed surveillance video, the incident occurred at 6:40 a.m. on June 1,2020 in Chiayi County, Taiwan. A white Tesla car was driving at high speed, and there was an emergency in front of it. The video showed that a large truck rolled over and crossed the left side of the expressway, occupying almost two lanes on the left side.

At this time, the nearby vehicles realize the emergency situation ahead and slow down and change lanes one after another to avoid secondary accidents. At the same time, the driver of a large truck suspected of rollover stands behind the vehicle and close to the fence to remind passing vehicles to change lanes.

However, a white Tesla driver coming at high speed from behind did not seem to see the emergency situation ahead and continued to drive at high speed along the left lane, eventually hitting the rollover truck without slowing down, knocking the truck 2-3 meters away.

Netizens also have different guesses about this 'strange' accident. Many netizens believe that drivers may be distracted in assisted driving, and it is impossible to have no signs of slowing down in the face of such accidents. A well-known car blogger said,"It seems that assisted driving is used together, but the car failed to recognize static obstacles, and then there is no road accident, I hope people are OK, everyone takes warning."

Taiwan media reported that the accident caused no casualties, while Tesla owners said they had turned on the automatic assistance system at a speed of about 110km/h. Tesla officials have not responded at this time.

All Tesla vehicles are currently equipped with the hardware required for autonomous driving assistance, and all vehicles come standard with basic driving assistance features. According to official propaganda, the function can automatically assist steering, acceleration and braking according to other vehicles and pedestrians in the driving lane after activation, including emergency braking, collision warning and blind spot monitoring, while the front-end radar can detect obstacles at a long distance ahead, up to 160m.

If assisted driving is on, Tesla vehicles should be able to detect obstacles in front of them and implement emergency braking or other actions to minimize or avoid collisions. Of course, the driver himself is in control of the vehicle and should not be distracted in any state.

In addition, there are netizens remind, Hope owners in the auxiliary driving state when running high speed do not play mobile phones, Don't sleep, The bottom line of safety is not to leave the road.

Even if Tesla's assisted driving function is turned on, the driver still needs to hold the steering wheel with both hands, keep his eyes on the road and be ready to intervene in response to emergencies on the road. Tesla also reminds users on its website that the currently available features require active driver monitoring and that the vehicle has not yet achieved full autonomous driving.

The truck, which rolled over and lay across the road, was the equivalent of a 'stationary object' in a similar accident in the United States. In May 2016, Joshua Brown, then 40, drove his Tesla Model S on Highway 27 in Levi County, Florida, when Autopilot was turned on. Just as a large truck turned left at an intersection, Brown's Tesla hit the side of the truck head-on, killing Brown in the driver's seat.

The NHTSA investigation report said Tesla's Autopilot did not have the defects that led to the fatal crash. The report also notes that people should not rely too much on Autopilot to detect traffic at intersections, and that there is plenty of time (up to seven seconds) for the drivers to hit the brakes before they hit the truck.

Therefore, no matter what the circumstances of driving Tesla cars, drivers must control the vehicle autonomously and should not rely too much on the vehicle's assisted driving function. After all, fully autonomous driving has not yet been realized.
