Foreign media reported that BYD will supply electric car batteries to Ford, and Changan Ford is seeking approval to produce a plug-in hybrid vehicle equipped with BYD batteries. This marks the first time that BYD has reached a battery supply agreement with a foreign car brand.

In addition, according to the declaration information of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Changan Ford Ruiji PHEV model will be launched, and its power battery will come from Xi'an Zhongdi Lithium Battery Co., Ltd., which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of BYD. At the same time, the battery type is Ni-Co-mn lithium ion battery.

Ford said last year that it planned to launch more than 30 new or significantly revamped models in the Chinese market by the end of 2021, more than 1/3 of which will be electric vehicles.

Earlier, BYD has repeatedly said it will be independent of the battery business and will supply other companies with power batteries, as well as electric vehicle parts such as power management equipment.

In addition to Ford's cooperation, in March 2020, BYD formally entered into a joint venture with Toyota to establish BYD Toyota Electric vehicle Technology Co., Ltd. According to the enterprise information, BYD Toyota Electric vehicle Technology Co., Ltd. is engaged in the design and development of pure electric vehicles and their derivative vehicles, as well as the design and development of spare parts, components and assemblies for pure electric vehicles and their derivative vehicles.

According to the agreement reached between Toyota and BYD on the establishment of a joint venture research and development company for pure electric vehicles, the new company established by the two sides will carry out the design, research and development of pure electric vehicles and the platforms and parts used for the vehicles.

According to an official document from BYD, the cooperation includes the joint development of pure electric models for cars and low-chassis SUV, as well as power batteries for these products. Future products will use the Toyota brand and are scheduled to be launched in the Chinese market by 2025.

Successive cooperation with Toyota and Ford has further expanded the scope of BYD's electric supply business.
