After Rand Cool Road Ze, Prado 2.7L, Reiz and Crown, FAW Toyota officially announced the discontinuation of another model. On June 23, the last new car of FAW Toyota Prado 3.5L model was off the assembly line, which means that the domestic Prado (PRADO) car series was officially and completely discontinued.

Sichuan FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd.(Chengdu Factory) held a production suspension ceremony for this purpose. From 2003 to 2020, 346,700 units of domestic Prado were produced cumulatively.

It is worth noting that at present, there is no successor model after the production of domestic Prado. In order to ensure the continuous operation of Sichuan FAW Toyota factory and reduce the adverse impact on the region caused by Prado shutdown, Sichuan FAW Toyota has introduced TNGA technology platform B-class sedan Asia Dragon, with a production capacity of 100,000 vehicles/year. However, Sichuan FAW Toyota's original production capacity of 5,000 light passenger cars per year remains unchanged.

According to previous documents of Sichuan FAW Toyota, the suspension of Prado models is mainly affected by national fuel limit regulations and national VI emission regulations. In May this year, the Ministry of Ecological Environment, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and other four departments jointly issued an announcement on adjusting the relevant requirements for the implementation of the national VI emission standards for light vehicles. Since July 1,2020, the national VI emission standards for light vehicles shall be implemented nationwide, and the production of light vehicles with the national five emission standards shall be prohibited. Imported light vehicles shall also comply with the national VI emission standards.

The Prado 3.5L model on sale was launched in November 2017. The whole series is only equipped with 3.5L V6 engine, matched with 6-speed automatic manual transmission, and replaced with a brand-new time-sharing four-wheel drive system. The official price is 4358 - 604,800 yuan. In view of the discontinuation of the model, there is news that Prado's stock cars and used cars may usher in rapid price increases.

Many consumers are accustomed to calling it "overbearing". Toyota Prado is a representative model of hard-core off-road vehicles. It is an off-road god vehicle in the hearts of some domestic consumers. Because of its good market reputation, solid and durable characteristics, and high second-hand preservation rate, the price of this car has always been at a higher position in the same level.

The sales volume of domestic Prado is not bad. In 2018 and 2019, the monthly sales volume of Prado can be stable at about 2800 units, which is also a satisfactory result for FAW Toyota. FAW Toyota will eventually stop production, more based on policy factors and enterprise product strategy considerations. Large-displacement naturally aspirated SUVs and older products will eventually be replaced by more market-oriented models. Therefore, Prado's shutdown is only a microcosm of the gradual withdrawal of large-displacement self-priming products from the Chinese market.

In addition to Prado car series, FAW Toyota will also completely stop the production of domestic crown models in 2020. At the end of April, FAW Toyota Crown models have been officially discontinued. At present, FAW Toyota has three production bases, located in Tianjin, Jilin Changchun and Chengdu, Sichuan Province respectively. Its leading products include IZOA, VIOS, COROLLA, RAV4, AVALON and COASTER buses. With the elimination of many old products, FAW Toyota will also usher in more brand-new models, including a new generation of Highlander, a new generation of Sienna, a new generation of Harrier, and a variety of new energy models.

FAW Toyota's cumulative sales volume in 2019 was 738,000 vehicles, up 2% year-on-year. In May 2020, FAW Toyota sold 72,000 new vehicles, with a year-on-year growth of 2%. The cumulative total sales volume from January to May reached 269,000 vehicles.

Toyota Land Cruiser, Reiz, Crown, Prado and other classic models have been delisted for six times, confirming the rapid changes in China's automobile market, while the business strategy and product planning of the enterprise are constantly adapting to the new market environment. It can be expected that in the future, more models with a deep foundation in Chinese consumer sentiment will also be launched into the Chinese market.
