AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)06/26 Report--

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into Tesla's Model S touchscreen problem, involving 63000 Model S cars made in 2012-2015, after receiving several complaints about touchscreen failure, according to media reports.

It is understood that in the past year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received a total of 11 complaints that when the flash memory device that controls the media control unit (MCU) runs out of memory, the central control screen may fail, which will lead to the loss of auditory and visual touch screen functions such as infotainment, navigation and web browsing, and the rear camera image will also be lost in reverse. No accidents caused by related failures have been reported yet, but even if there are no related failures, Tesla Model S may still face a recall.

In February this year, Tesla recalled the Model X in both the Chinese market and the North American market, including 15000 vehicles in the North American market and 3183 vehicles in the Chinese market. According to reports, when some vehicles within the recall scope are exposed to high corrosion environment such as strong deicing salt for a long time, the bolts that fix the steering motor on the steering gear housing may be corroded and broken, resulting in steering motor displacement and transmission belt skidding, resulting in weakening or loss of steering power, which may increase the risk of vehicle collision.

At the time, the National Highway Safety Administration of Canada made it clear that it had not received any crashes or injuries related to the recall, but it still recalled Model X. Therefore, once it is confirmed that the central control large screen failure is related to safety, even if there is no accident, Model S may face a recall.

It is worth mentioning that previously, due to the hidden dangers of power steering, Model X was recalled, which could be eliminated only by replacing the relevant parts, but the problem involved in the "software" part, which was relatively difficult to solve.

In fact, Tesla increases the sense of technology and simplicity in the car through the touch screen, but also increases the cost of failure to a certain extent. In May this year, Tesla domestic Model 3 had an APP outage, resulting in the central control screen could not be lit, vehicles could not be used normally, and so on. Although the fault was quickly repaired, many car owners strongly questioned Tesla's safety.

However, Tesla Model 3 outage incident did not set off much public opinion storm. Data show that Tesla's Model 3 sales reached 11000 in May, winning the top spot in new energy vehicle sales. In terms of sales volume, Model S is inferior to Model 3, so the impact of Model S on Tesla is very limited even if it is investigated.

Since the Model 3 was made domestically made last year, Tesla's share price has continued to rise, even becoming the world's largest car company by market capitalization. However, in this context, Tesla's automotive products have frequently exposed negative events, especially the Model 3 model, which has been exposed many times since the delivery of the domestic version, even causing tragic accidents. In addition, according to the latest new car quality report released by J.D.Power, Tesla's entry into the list for the first time has become a bright spot, but the bottom of the new car quality score has become another bright spot.

For Tesla, although current sales continue to soar and remain at the top of the list of new energy vehicles for many months, product reliability continues to be questioned, and it is urgent to improve product reliability. If Tesla cannot keep his word of mouth, it may only be a matter of time before sales plummet.
