The latest figures released by the Federation of passenger cars showed that retail sales in the passenger car market reached 1.597 million units in July, up 7.7% from a year earlier, which it said was the strongest positive growth since May 2018. From January to July, retail sales in the national passenger car market totaled 9.309 million, down 18.5% from a year earlier.

According to the sales ranking released by FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC-Volkswagen, SAIC-GM, Geely Motor, Dongfeng Nissan, Changan Motor, FAW Toyota, Guangzhou Automobile Toyota, Guangzhou Automobile Honda and Dongfeng Honda, the top 10 manufacturers in July 2020 were basically the same as in June, but among the top 10 manufacturers in car sales, only SAIC-Volkswagen showed a decline.

"North Volkswagen" maintained sales growth, relying on Volkswagen brand, Audi brand and Jetta brand to continue to release in different parts of the market, once again won the monthly sales champion. Data show that FAW-Volkswagen sold 177000 vehicles in July, up 15.3% from a year earlier.

South Volkswagen's car sales fell 5.5 per cent in July from a year earlier to 137000, the seventh-month decline in SAIC-Volkswagen sales since 2020, making it the only car company to fall in the ranks of manufacturers. It is believed that the continuous decline in SAIC-Volkswagen sales has a lot to do with the quality concerns caused by the Passat collision and the continued marginalization of the Skoda brand due to its continued sales.

FAW-Volkswagen's market share increased to 11.1% from 10.8% in June, while SAIC-Volkswagen's market share declined to 8.6% from 8.8% in June. North and South Volkswagen together accounted for 19.7% of the domestic passenger car market.

SAIC GM finally achieved growth, with car sales rising 1.5 per cent to 117000 units in July. It is believed that SAIC GM will be able to achieve sales growth in July, mainly due to the return of its main models to the four-cylinder market, coupled with the centralized updating of a number of models, SAIC GM's return to growth in July is also expected. However, SAIC GM still had a 29.26% decline as of July, far exceeding the market level.

Geely and Changan are the two independent car companies in the top 10, accounting for 11.4% of the domestic passenger car market. Geely's July sales rose 6.3 per cent to 101000, reaching 45 per cent of its annual sales target of 1.41 million. In terms of specific models, Geely Boyue sold 16883 vehicles in July, the Dihao family sold 25084 vehicles, the Shuangfeng sold 17174 vehicles, and the Vision family sold 16318 vehicles.

Sales of Changan's own brand rose 62.8 per cent to 81000 vehicles in July, making it the biggest increase among the top 10 manufacturers. The reason why Changan independent brand sales have been able to achieve substantial growth is mainly due to the strong output of CS75 cars and Changan Yiyou. Data show that in July 2020, Changan CS75 sales were 21358, Changan Yiyou 18735, CS35 and CS55 sales were 6389 and 7575, respectively, and new car UNI-T sales were 10081.

The 7th to 10th places are all occupied by Japanese car companies, while the four joint ventures between Toyota and Honda all have monthly sales of about 70,000 vehicles, all of which have achieved year-on-year growth. Among them, FAW Toyota increased 9.5% to 72000 vehicles, Guangzhou Auto Honda increased 24.6% to 69000 vehicles, Guangzhou Auto Toyota increased 27.35 to 69000 vehicles, Dongfeng Honda increased 11.7% to 67000 vehicles, this is Dongfeng Honda's first increase this year. In addition, Dongfeng Nissan, a Japanese brand, is also in the top 10, leading Toyota and Honda joint ventures in sales, rising 9.3% to 100000 vehicles in July, mainly due to the sharp growth of models such as Xuanyi, Qijun and Teana.

Overall, a number of head car companies continued to maintain a rise in sales in July, speeding up the achievement of their annual targets, but the performance of some car companies is still worrying. Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the Federation of passengers, said that with the increase in demand for cars and the recovery of the economy, the car market in the second half of the year can reach a growth level of more than five points. For the whole year, the growth of the entire car market is expected to be less than 10% negative growth.
