Tesla plans to ship cars from his Shanghai super factory to other markets such as Asia and Europe, according to a person familiar with the matter, according to the Financial Associated Press.

According to the plan, the Chinese-made Tesla Model 3, which is scheduled to be delivered to foreign markets, is likely to start mass production in the fourth quarter of this year, with target markets including Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Before the Chinese-made Tesla Model 3 is exported to overseas markets, the Tesla models of customers in these regions will all be Tesla models made in the United States. At the same time, Chinese-made models will also be sold in Japan and Hong Kong in Asia.

Tesla's representative in China declined to comment on the news.

The reason for this important plan is due to the sales of the Tesla brand in the past two years. Data show that the number of electric vehicles on the European market has reached 230700 this year, an increase of 131 per cent over the same period last year, but watching Tesla's market performance in July, there was a 76 per cent collapse, with total monthly sales of only 1050. The number of registrations in Germany fell 22 per cent in the first half of the year to 5306, compared with 3681 in France from January to July.

In the outside world, the main reason is that the factory in Fremont, California has experienced a long shutdown, there is some difficulty in supply, and the production capacity may only meet the US market, while the manufacturing capacity of Chinese super factories ultimately meets the needs of the Chinese market.

Affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, Tesla's California factory stopped production in March, although production resumed in May, but the suspension still affected the supply of new cars in Europe. Throughout the first half of the year, only two freighters left Fremont for Europe.

At the same time, the company plans to build its first European plant in Berlin, Germany, which will not be ready for production until 2021, so the export of other markets through the Shanghai plant will also be able to deliver European models earlier.

According to the data, Tesla's first super factory in the United States, Fremont, has a production capacity of 500000 units, while the Shanghai factory, Tesla's first super factory outside the United States, has a production capacity of 15-200000 units and 500000 units in the second phase. Although the production capacity is still increasing, according to previous reports, the construction of the second phase of the Tesla Shanghai super factory is nearing completion, and the production equipment has already been installed and is expected to be completed in October this year. The future phase II plant will undertake the production task of Tesla Model Y, and with the Shanghai super factory phase II project put into use, the annual output is expected to increase to 300000 vehicles.

As for the production capacity of 500000 in Berlin and 500000 in Austin, Texas, the two plants are still under planning. Therefore, it is the best choice for Tesla to export to the overseas market through the Shanghai factory.

Data show that Tesla's total car production in the second quarter of this year was 82271, down 5 per cent from 87048 in the same period last year and 20 per cent from 102672 in the previous quarter. Tesla had more than 142346 Model 3s worldwide in the first half of the year, accounting for nearly 30 per cent of its 2020 target of 500000.
