On Sept. 12, Hainan Radio and Television Station Live Hainan and a number of Weibo cars released a video of a BYD yuan EV smoking and burning in the street.

From the video, a parked white BYD yuan EV new energy vehicle emits a lot of smoke, and there are many open fires at the bottom of the vehicle. This time, firefighters are putting out the burning vehicles and reminding onlookers to "back up a little bit."

Another video shows that as firefighters continue to fight with water, BYD's EV new energy vehicle shows no sign of the fire spreading, but the vehicle is still emitting a lot of smoke.

According to a live broadcast from Hainan, the incident occurred at 07:30 on Sept. 12 when a new energy vehicle parked on Boya Road, Qiongshan District, Haikou City caught fire. The fire spread rapidly and there was a lot of smoke at the scene. After receiving the alarm, the fire immediately rushed to the scene, the fire was quickly brought under control, but the car body was seriously burned.

Mr. Liang, the owner of the EV new energy car involved, told the media that the new energy vehicle was a BYD brand and had only been in use for a year and a half after spending more than 100,000 yuan on it. Mr. Liang said that because there was no charging pile installed, he recharged from the fourth floor. At about 2 o'clock this morning, he cut off the power when the car was recharged. Unexpectedly, at 07:30 in the morning, he suddenly smelled a bad smell, and then there was a noise from the car downstairs, and he saw his car catch fire.

At present, the fire department is further investigating the specific cause of the accident. At the same time, after the accident, the relevant after-sales department of the vehicle brand has been present to assist in the investigation.

As of press time, BYD auto officials did not give a corresponding explanation on the matter.

According to the data, the 2018 and 2019 BYD yuan EV new energy vehicles are equipped with ternary lithium battery power battery types, with a range of up to 305km to 410km, and the manufacturer's guiding price is 8.99-139900 yuan.

With a large number of new energy vehicles gradually put on the market, the fire incident has become a hot topic of social concern. Some netizens believe that as an emerging industry, some actions of new energy vehicles will be infinitely magnified by the outside world, and the fire incident has become the focus of network attention, so there is the illusion of "high spontaneous combustion rate". There are also many views that there is no analysis report that the spontaneous combustion rate of new energy vehicles is higher than that of fuel vehicles, so spontaneous combustion should be treated correctly and rationally. Relevant manufacturers and management departments should investigate in time so as to continuously improve the quality and safety level of new energy vehicles.

In view of the current situation of new energy vehicles, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology also gave a statement. Xin Guobin, vice minister of industry and information technology, said at a news conference held by the State Council News Office on July 23, 2020 that many consumers only drive new energy vehicles, and their care and maintenance of the vehicles are not in place in time. In fact, the battery is a very fragile component, in addition to the battery unit, there are battery package management problems, the technical requirements are very high, and timely maintenance and testing are needed in the course of use, otherwise there is a greater risk in the charging process and an hour after charging, once the thermal control management is not good, there may be deflagration. Even with this problem, the spontaneous combustion rate of new energy vehicles is still lower than that of traditional cars. Centralized management by the battery operator can improve the safety of the battery.

However, the burning incident of the BYD yuan EV new energy vehicle has yet to be announced by the official investigation results. I hope that the authorities can give detailed investigation results and reports as soon as possible, so as to give the public a clear explanation.
