Sales in the domestic narrow-sense passenger car market rose 8.9 per cent to 1.703 million vehicles in August from a year earlier, the strongest positive growth since May 2018, and cumulative sales fell 15.2 per cent to 11.015 million vehicles from January to August compared with the same period last year, according to the Federation of passengers. The decline in sales by major car companies narrowed further.

Combined with the sales data of previous months, under the influence of consumer consumption level and various policies to boost the market, a number of car companies still showed double-digit growth in the off-season in August, of course, some car companies are still unable to withstand the downward trend. For example, six of the top 30 auto companies, including SAIC-Volkswagen, SAIC-GM, Beijing Hyundai, Dongfeng Yueda Kia, Dongfeng Xiaokang and Dongfeng Liuzhou, showed negative sales growth, including three mainstream automakers, with the highest decline of more than 30%. Of course, there is no shortage of car companies that have seen a surge in sales. FAW Hongqi's August sales increased by 109.9% to 21020, Beijing by 71.7% to 9500 and Changan by 60.8% to 85928.

Among the Top15 companies in August, the market performance was more or less the same, with the two companies that have not yet become regular car companies-SAIC-Volkswagen and SAIC-GM.

Since SAIC-Volkswagen lost its sales champion, the gap between SAIC and FAW-Volkswagen has become wider and wider. SAIC-Volkswagen car sales fell 4.0 per cent to 145000 in August, the biggest decline among Top15 carmakers, according to the data. As a sibling of SAIC-Volkswagen, FAW-Volkswagen's sales in August and cumulative sales in the previous August both increased compared with the same period last year, and it is also the only car company on the list that exceeds 1 million taels, far exceeding SAIC-Volkswagen's nearly 350000 vehicles.

SAIC GM, which owns three major brands of Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac, has become one of the leading companies covering the middle and low end of the joint venture and the luxury car market, but sales have collapsed due to large terminal price concessions and the three-cylinder strategy. After achieving growth in July, it fell 3.4% again. For SAIC, the decline in both head companies is obviously under great pressure, and the strength in the later period is also worrying.

In terms of independent brands, Geely, Changan, SAIC GM Wuling, Great Wall, Chery and SAIC passenger cars lead the development of independent brands. Geely remains the leader of its own brand, with sales up 12.1 per cent to 113443 vehicles in August, while Changan is the only independent brand that has achieved double growth, with sales rising 60.8 per cent to 85928 in August and 16.2 per cent to 558398 from January to August, mainly due to the strong exports of the Changan CS75 series and Changan Escape.

In terms of Japanese brands, Dongfeng's daily production and sales are ahead of Liangfeng, but its growth momentum is weak. On the contrary, Dongfeng Honda and Guangzhou Auto Honda's sales have both increased by more than 20%. GAC Toyota fell out of the top 10 and was overtaken by Great Wall Motor, while FAW Toyota was overtaken by passenger cars in the first 15 days, but the momentum of development in the later period was still considerable.

Overall, the cumulative sales of FAW-Volkswagen, Changan Automobile, Guangzhou Auto Toyota, brilliance BMW and Beijing Mercedes-Benz among Top15 automakers have all become positive, while other automakers still have varying degrees of decline, including SAIC-Volkswagen and SAIC-GM.

Outside the Top15, there is no lack of outstanding performance of the car companies. For example, the performance of FAW Red Flag in recent years is surprising. It seems that it is not affected by the epidemic, and its cumulative sales increase is as high as 104.2%. After Changan Ford launched the Ruiji model, its sales increased steadily in 2020, and the increases of 45.4% in August and 25.4% from January to August made its follow-up development full of expectations.

In terms of the new power of car building, the development of Lulai is still relatively stable, with sales increasing by 104.1% to 3965 in August and 109.9% to 21667 from January to August.

In the environment of stock competition, the weak performance of the weak is more obvious, and the survival of car companies has once again aroused concern. Of the 41 car companies whose sales have declined, there are as many as 25 with monthly sales below three figures, of which 18 have returned to zero, such as Dongfeng Renault, Huatai, Zhi Dou, Kangdi, Linde, Yongyuan and other brands no longer exist. BAIC Yinxiang, Bixu, Zhongtai, Yulong, Lifan, seahorse and other car companies are also on the brink of life and death. In the environment of stock competition, brands without core technology and innovation consciousness are gradually merged or eliminated, which has become history.
