The China Automobile Association released a list of the top 15 enterprise groups in China's brand car sales from January to August 2020. Under the environment of the epidemic and intensified competition in the auto market, sales of most independent-brand car companies declined, and only five achieved year-on-year growth.

By contrast, some independent brand car companies have fallen out of the top 15 rankings, the overall car market reflects the gradual concentration of the market to the head brand car enterprises, weak brand performance.

Judging from the ranking from January to August, the sales of SAIC's independent sector still took the lead, but fell by 14.3%; Geely ranked third, with a double-digit decline, and a number of independent car companies showed varying degrees of decline; only five car companies achieved an increase in sales, including Changan Automobile, FAW Group and so on.

SAIC's independent business sales ranked first, with cumulative sales of 1.304 million vehicles from January to August, down 14.3% from the same period last year, with a decrease of 217000 vehicles. SAIC's independent business is mainly composed of Roewe, Mingjue, Wuling, Baojun, Chase and other brands. Among them, SAIC passenger cars (Roewe and Mingjue) accumulated sales of 342900 vehicles from January to August, down 17.32% from the same period last year; SAIC GM Wuling Motor sold 809000 vehicles, down 17.46% from the same period last year; and SAIC Chase sold 100000 vehicles, up 15.44% from the same period last year.

Changan, which ranked second, did well, with its independent business growing 6.4 per cent in the first eight months, with sales of 881000 vehicles. Changan independent business includes Changan brand, Changan Auchan, Changan Kaicheng and so on. Among them, the more outstanding performance is Changan CS75, which has sold more than 20, 000 units for five consecutive months.

Geely ranked third, with cumulative sales of 749000 vehicles from January to August, down 11.5 per cent from a year earlier. In the first half of the year, Geely fell sharply due to the epidemic and other factors, and Geely resumed monthly sales growth in the second half of the year. Geely's independent business mainly includes Geely brand, Lecker brand and so on.

Dongfeng Motor Group's independent business includes Fengshen, Fashion, scenery, demeanor and commercial vehicle brands. The group sold a total of 686000 vehicles from January to August, a slight decline compared with the same period last year. Great Wall mainly promotes the SUV and pickup markets, with brands such as Harvard, WEY, Great Wall pickup, Euler and so on. Great Wall sold 563000 vehicles in the previous August, down 9.8% from the same period last year. With the rapid increase in Great Wall pickup sales, Great Wall cannon models are hot, and the proportion of pickup sales is gradually increasing. The rest of Great Wall's brands fell, with only pickup models growing, with sales of 137500 vehicles in the first eight months, up 62.5 per cent from a year earlier.

In the 6-10 ranking, FAW and Sinotruk achieved sales growth, while BAIC, Chery and Jianghuai all declined.

FAW Group's independent business mainly includes Red Flag, Pentium and Jiefang brands. with the sharp rise in sales of Red Flag and Liberation brands, FAW has also achieved rapid development, with cumulative sales of 535000 vehicles in the first eight months, an increase of 37.1% over the same period last year. Among them, Hongqi brand sold a total of 108500 units from January to August, an increase of 108 per cent over the same period last year.

BAIC Group's independent businesses include Beijing Brand, BAIC New Energy, BAIC Foton, etc., with sales of 535000 vehicles in the first eight months, down 14.3% from the same period last year. The new energy business fell sharply, with BAIC's cumulative sales of 18841 vehicles from January to August, down 78.68 per cent from the same period last year.

The 11th-15th rankings are BYD, GAC, Shaanxi Auto, brilliance and Chengdu Universiade. It is worth noting that Zhongtai Motor, which ranked 15th in the same period last year, has been replaced.

BYD sold 229000 vehicles from January to August, a decline of 21.3%, mainly due to the weak performance of the new energy sector. Specifically, BYD sold a total of 91060 new energy vehicles in the previous August, down 49.11% from the same month last year, while fuel vehicle sales totaled 135732, up 16.88% from the same month last year.

GAC's independent business was also weak, with sales falling 17.3 per cent from January to August compared with the same period a year earlier to 204000 vehicles.

From the sales ranking, we can see that the commercial vehicle market is gradually increasing, including FAW Jiefang, Sinotruk, Shaanxi Automobile have achieved sales growth. According to the China Automobile Association, from January to August this year, the production and sales of commercial vehicles in China completed 3.256 million and 3.263 million respectively, an increase of 19.3% and 17.3% respectively over the same period last year.

The major automobile groups can also know something about the development of their own business on the sales list. Nowadays, with the increasing competition environment in the automobile market, independent car companies are facing greater market problems, especially in the field of passenger cars, independent car companies are under increasing pressure from joint venture car companies to reduce prices. According to the report, a total of 4.089 million passenger cars were sold in China from January to August, down 21.3 percent from the same period last year, accounting for 36.2 percent of the total passenger car sales, with a market share down 2.7 percent from the same period last year.
