After deciding to return to the four-cylinder engine market, the sales growth trend of SAIC GM Buick brand has achieved immediate results. In September, SAIC GM Buick sold a total of 98722 vehicles, up 28% from a year earlier and the highest monthly sales in 24 months, with a total of 588382 sold in the first three quarters.

In terms of specific models, the new generation of Buick GL8 family sold 16825 vehicles in September, with a total of 100979 new cars sold in the first three quarters. As a 200000-yuan MPV, Buick GL8 still has a certain position in the MPV market, second only to SAIC GM Wuling Hongguang in sales.

In the Buick SUV family, the Ankowei (including Onkway S) sold a total of 15656 vehicles in September, making it the main sales force of Buick SUV models in China. In addition, Ankora (including Ankora GX) sold a total of 26677 vehicles in the first three quarters, an increase of 85 per cent over the same period last year.

After returning to the four-cylinder engine market, Buick Yinglang's sales continued to soar, with 31836 new cars sold in September, up 28 percent from a year earlier. Regal and LaCrosse sold 14893 and 6119 respectively in September, compared with 10183 in the first three quarters of Buick Micro Blue.

Thanks to effective strategic adjustments, Buick sales began to recover. Prior to this, SAIC GM was committed to the introduction of small displacement engines in response to stringent emission standards, but the acceptance of three-cylinder engines in the domestic market was not high, resulting in a decline in Buick brand sales. The Buick brand sold 1.2244 million vehicles in 2017, falling to 1.0681 million in 2018 and 837000 in 2019, according to data. For the weakness of the Buick brand in recent years, SAIC GM Deputy General Manager Shi Hong also admitted that in addition to the overall car market environment, SAIC GM three-cylinder engine strategy has affected sales.

After three consecutive years of labor pains, the Buick brand returned to the four-cylinder engine market in March, and Buick Yinglong's sales rose 143.2% to 30600 vehicles in the first month, making it the biggest increase in car sales in the top 10. As of August this year, sales of Yinglong models have returned to the top three, second only to Nissan Xuanyi and Volkswagen Longyi.

According to the plan, 10 new or modified models of the Buick brand will be put into the domestic market this year, while increasing the product layout in the new energy vehicle market. Thanks to strategic changes and continuous product updates, the Buick brand has sold a total of 588382 new cars in the first three quarters of this year.

In addition to the new product planning, the wide application of four-cylinder engine is also the focus of sales growth. With more models equipped with four-cylinder engines and the continuous development of various market segments, Buick sales are just around the corner. However, the continued rise in Buick sales will not solve SAIC GM's disadvantage. SAIC GM still has 26.05 per cent decline in sales of 798235 vehicles in the previous August due to the weak output of Chevrolet and Cadillac.
