AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)10/08 Report--
After Mercedes-Benz released the latest global car sales figures, BMW Group, as its biggest competitor, also disclosed the latest global sales figures for the third quarter. It surpassed Mercedes-Benz by a big advantage in the third quarter to become the best-selling luxury brand in that quarter.
According to the sales figures for the third quarter of 2020 officially released by the BMW Group, although affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, it continued to maintain a good growth trend in the third quarter after a recovery in sales in the second quarter. BMW Group brands sold a total of 675680 new cars (including BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brands) worldwide, an increase of 8.6 per cent over the same period last year. Compared with Mercedes-Benz's cumulative global sales of 613770 units in the third quarter, signs of recovery are more obvious.
However, judging from the full-year performance, BMW's sales are still on a downward trend as a result of the epidemic, with total sales of 1.6383 million vehicles, down 12.5% from the same period last year.
According to the group's brands, BMW brand sales rose 9.8% in the third quarter, delivering a total of 585336 vehicles. In the first three quarters, the BMW brand fell 11.3% year-on-year, while the BMW brand delivered 208144 new cars in the first three quarters, down 20% from the same period last year, while Rolls-Royce sold 2651 vehicles in the first three quarters, down 28.5% from the same period a year earlier.
Looking at the global market, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region achieved growth in the third quarter, only the American market showed a large downward trend. From the first three quarters of this year, only the Asia-Pacific region achieved positive sales. Thanks to the strong rebound in the Chinese market, it helps brands maintain a stable balance in the face of adversity.
With the help of the Chinese market, sales in the Asia-Pacific region surpassed those in Europe in the third quarter and the whole year, with a year-on-year increase of 24.9% to 288370 vehicles in the third quarter and 704523 vehicles in the first three quarters, an increase of 3% over the same period last year, making it the only region to achieve growth. Among them, the Chinese market has also become BMW's largest single market, with a total of 230612 vehicles sold in the third quarter, an increase of 31.1% over the same period last year, a large gap with other markets.
By contrast, the Americas continued to be affected by the epidemic, still maintaining a double-digit decline. Although Bernhard Bernhard Kuhnt, president of BMW's North American operations, has told him that BMW's record sales in the US in September were replenished by replenishment of vehicle supplies amid tight inventories in July and August, it failed to help the brand reverse the decline of previous months. At the same time, the collapse of the car rental market has also affected the performance of North America this year. Various factors have even led BMW to cope with the cost strain caused by the sharp drop in sales by cutting staff.
At the same time, 2020 will also be the "year of new energy" for BMW in China. BMW Group is expected to offer 25 new energy models in the global market by the end of 2023, more than half of which are pure electric vehicles. By 2030, BMW aims to deliver 7 million electric vehicles worldwide.
Although the global auto market has been seriously affected by the epidemic this year, and BMW Group is no exception, in the final analysis, external factors are objective. As the market gradually recovers, BMW Group's performance in the global market has gradually recovered.
