According to the latest data released by the Federation of passengers, retail sales in the passenger car market reached 1.91 million in September, up 7.3 per cent from a year earlier, the highest growth rate of about 8 per cent for three months in a row. Due to the impact of the early Spring Festival and epidemic factors on the first quarter, retail sales in the national passenger car market from January to September totaled 12.925 million, down 12.5 per cent from the same period last year.

According to the ranking of manufacturers' sales published by the Federation of passengers, the top 10 car companies have changed, with North and South Volkswagen and SAIC GM still in the top three, Geely Changan Great Wall three independent car companies in the top 10, and the rest occupied by four Japanese car companies.

It is worth noting that under the influence of the concept of "Golden Nine Silver Ten", only SAIC Volkswagen has seen a decline in sales in the top 10, while Guangzhou Auto Toyota has fallen out of the top 10. It should be noted that, in the narrow sense, the retail sales of passenger cars are market retail data, which can better reflect the market situation compared with the wholesale sales of manufacturers.

Volkswagen Group still maintains a strong position in China. Among them, FAW-Volkswagen sold 209000 vehicles in August, up 8.7% from a year earlier. "North Volkswagen" has Volkswagen, Jetta and Audi three major brands, respectively covering the mainstream, low-end and luxury markets, the products are relatively complete, so FAW-Volkswagen has a certain advantage in sales.

Compared with SAIC-Volkswagen, although passenger car sales still rank second, its sales performance can not be compared with that of the market as a whole. According to the data, SAIC-Volkswagen retail sales of passenger cars in September were 161000, down 8.5% from a year earlier. This is the ninth month in a row that SAIC-Volkswagen has seen sales decline, and it is also the only car company among the top 10 manufacturers whose sales have declined.

FAW-Volkswagen and SAIC-Volkswagen have very different sales performance. FAW-Volkswagen sales continued to grow for many months, while SAIC-Volkswagen has not stopped falling, as of September 2020, FAW-Volkswagen sales lead SAIC-Volkswagen nearly 400000 vehicles.

SAIC GM still ranks third in terms of retail sales of 147000 vehicles in September, with a growth rate of 18.7% slightly better than the market. Buick sales rose 28 per cent to 98722 vehicles in September, while Cadillac rose 41.7 per cent to 26000 vehicles, according to official figures.

At present, SAIC GM has accelerated the progress of product launch and made compromises to the market on product strategy, including a return to the four-cylinder engine version of mainstream car products. As for Cadillac, after losing the crown of its second-tier luxury brand, it increased terminal discounts on many of its models and successfully overtook Lexus in September.

In terms of independent brands, Geely, Changan and Great Wall are all in the top 10, and the three independent car companies together account for 16.1% of the domestic passenger car market. Among them, Geely sales rose 6.4 per cent to 118000 vehicles in September, thanks to a number of product launches, Geely brand and Lecker brand sales continued to pick up. As of that month, Geely had achieved 66% of its annual sales target of 1.32 million vehicles.

The retail volume of Changan Automobile in September was 98000, up 46.7% from the same period last year, making it the car company with the largest increase in sales among the top 10 manufacturers. The sharp increase in Changan car sales was mainly due to continued hot sales of the CS75 series, Changan Easonic and UNI-T, with official figures showing that Changan CS75 sold 25724 vehicles in September, while Changan UNI-T and Changan Yitou sold 10601 and 18481 respectively.

After falling out of the top 10 in August, Great Wall made it into the top 10 again in September, with monthly retail sales up 8.4% to 90000. Great Wall has four major brands: Harvard, WEY, Euler and Great Wall, of which sales of the Harvard brand rose 5.14% year-on-year to 79120 in September, of which Harvard H6 alone reached 40475, accounting for 34.4% of the total sales of Great Wall.

The remaining four seats are all occupied by Japanese joint venture car companies. Of this total, Dongfeng Nissan retail sales rose 5.3 per cent to 119000 vehicles in September. In terms of specific models, sales of Xuanyi cars rose 51.4 per cent year-on-year to 57438, while Teana rose 14.3 per cent to 11828, while SUV Qijun and Xiaoke sold 15168 and 15553 respectively in September.

The market performance of Dongfeng Honda, FAW Toyota and Guangzhou Auto Honda is quite similar, with retail sales of about 80,000 vehicles in September, up 20.2%, 37.4% and 21.7% respectively from a year earlier. Thanks to the good market feedback of new products, as well as the close relationship between brand marketing, technology investment and product strategy, the share of Japanese brands in the domestic market is increasing. It is worth mentioning that GAC Toyota failed to squeeze into the top 10 in September's terminal retail data.

Overall, a number of head car companies continued to maintain a rise in sales in September, speeding up the achievement of annual targets, but the performance of some car companies is still worrying. The Federation said that the domestic passenger car market will enter a period of strong sales in October. As the domestic epidemic situation during the double National Day period is relatively stable, it has laid a stronger confidence in the economic and social recovery in the fourth quarter.
