Corolla is FAW Toyota's best-selling model, sales in recent months continue to climb, but in this good market performance, FAW Toyota is going to launch a three-cylinder model. Recently, the new Corolla appeared in the latest batch application list of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. According to the application information, the appearance of the new Corolla has not changed much from the current models on sale. It is still built on TNGA platform, but a naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine has been added.

From the real car point of view, the appearance of the brand-new Corolla is consistent with that of the model on sale. The large size front air intake grille is matched with the C-shaped decoration on both sides of the front surround, and the styling is still a little old-fashioned.

According to the declaration information, the new Corolla has six weight models of 1290kg, 1315kg, 1330kg, 1335kg, 1340kg and 1345kg, so the new car will have at least six models. In terms of body size, the length, width and height are 4635/1780/1435 (1455) mm respectively, and the wheelbase is 2700mm, which is consistent with the current model on sale.

The biggest change of the new Corolla is in power. According to the declaration information, the new car will adopt two models of 1.5L three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with code number N15A/M15B, with maximum power of 89kw.

At present, 2021 models of Carola on sale in China were officially launched on July 13 this year. Five new models were launched, with a price range of 119,800 - 145,800 yuan. The power Corolla is equipped with a 1.2T turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a maximum power of 85kw and a maximum torque of 185N·m, matched with a 10-speed CVT gearbox.

According to previous reports, FAW Toyota TNGA 1.5L engine project started construction in May 2018 and was officially completed and put into operation in May 2020, with an annual production of 108,000 TNGA 1.5L engines. The reconstruction will also reduce the annual production capacity of 1.2T engines by 108,000 units, and the final total production capacity will remain unchanged. The 1.5L three-cylinder self-priming engine may replace the powertrain on brand-new models, including Vios, Corolla and more.

It is worth noting that even with a 1.5L three-cylinder engine, the new Corolla is no less powerful than the current 1.2T four-cylinder turbocharged.

But even so, the market for "three-cylinder engine" friendly degree is not high, for a three-cylinder engine less than a cylinder, consumers generally can not accept, due to physical factors three-cylinder engine jitter, uneven operation, noise and other characteristics, manufacturers can only be solved through various technical means, the optimization effect of each manufacturer is also very different.

In the domestic market, including BMW, Buick, Chevrolet, Geely and other brand models are equipped with small-displacement three-cylinder engines, but sales are not optimistic. Earlier, Buick Yinglang and Chevrolet Cruze because of the three-cylinder machine and led to a sharp decline in sales, this year some models returned to four-cylinder sales significantly.

As FAW Toyota's best-selling model, Corolla has put a question mark on its market performance after carrying a three-cylinder engine. Data show that FAW Toyota's cumulative sales volume in the first three quarters increased by 2.9% to 547691 vehicles, among which Carola increased by 1.4% to 248803 vehicles, accounting for 45% of FAW Toyota's total sales volume, second only to Nissan Xuanyi and Volkswagen Lavida in the car field. For such a model, Toyota actually took the initiative to launch a three-cylinder model, do not know how the market performance?
