GM announced the recall of Chevrolet-branded electric vehicles from 2017 to 2019, including about 9500 in South Korea and 51000 in the United States, Yonhap news agency reported. There have been at least five fires around the world.

GM said the recalled vehicles were equipped with batteries made by LG Chemical in South Korea, which are at risk of catching fire when they are fully charged or about to be fully charged. GM says there is a risk of fire when the battery is full or close to full. The company also said it had developed software to limit the maximum charge of a vehicle to 90% to reduce risk, and that the company would determine an appropriate final maintenance plan. Dealers will start updating the vehicle's battery software next week.

"We will work with GM to conduct a sincere investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire," LG Chemical said in a statement. The batteries produced by LG Chemical are currently the most widely used in sold electric vehicles in the world, and the company's customers include Hyundai, Volkswagen, Volvo and other 13 well-known car companies.

Not long ago, Hyundai recalled nearly 77000 Kona electric vehicles worldwide, saying the cells may be defective, increasing the risk of batteries short-circuiting or catching fire, while Hyundai recalled vehicles that also used LG chemical cells.
