AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)11/18 Report--
Following the completion of a number of cooperation projects between Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler and China's Geely, a few days ago, foreign media reported that Daimler will launch a new cooperation with Geely, and the two sides will jointly develop a new generation of engines to be used in brand models.
Daimler, the parent company of Germany's Mercedes-Benz, said on Tuesday that it would work with Geely to build the next-generation internal combustion engine for hybrid cars, the German business daily reported. "the two companies plan to develop an efficient modular engine," according to a Daimler spokesman. " It is reported that the engine will be a four-cylinder engine and a new generation of gasoline engines that can be electrified. It may be used in future gas-electric hybrid vehicles in inland and Europe, with the goal of improving engine efficiency while reducing costs with economies of scale.
According to the plan, Daimler will be responsible for the technical research and development of the engine and maintain its production capacity in Europe, which will be produced by Geely in China.
The report also pointed out that the plan will begin in 2024 and is expected to produce hundreds of thousands of pieces a year. The newly developed engines will be used in Daimler, Geely and Volvo in the future. In addition, through this partnership program, Daimler will save hundreds of millions of dollars a year.
As of press time, Daimler declined to comment, acknowledging only that the partnership was aimed at improving the group's competitiveness. Geely declined to comment.
Although Geely's parent company is a single major shareholder in Daimler, it owns nearly 10% of the shares. But it will also be the first time the two groups have worked together on engines. At the beginning of this year, there were media reports that Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler and Volvo were considering cooperation in the internal combustion engine field to cut R & D costs, but the final plan has not yet been implemented.
It is worth noting that if the two groups carry out this cooperation, this will be the fourth cooperation project between the two sides.
In September 2019, the two sides jointly invested in the global urban air travel brand Volocopter to explore the possibility of new technologies.
On February 24, 2018, Geely Group Co., Ltd. acquired a 9.69% stake in Daimler. Daimler then said it might work with Geely. On October 24 of the same year, Daimler launched its first project with Geely-a joint venture to set up a high-end chauffeured car service company, which is now Yaoxing.
On March 28th, 2019, the two sides announced that they would form a joint venture with a 50:50 stake to jointly operate and promote the transformation of the smart brand around the world, with a view to building smart into the world's leading high-end electric smart car brand.
It is not difficult to see that the cooperation between Daimler and Geely will not only meet the "integration" of R & D technology between the two sides, but also accelerate more cooperation between the two sides and help to cope with future changes in the automobile industry. At the same time, Geely, which is weaker than the other two in terms of technological research and development, may be the biggest beneficiary.
In addition, a Renault spokesman told European Automotive News that the cooperation between Daimler and Geely on the new engine does not mean the end of the cooperation between Daimler and Renault.
