Japan's Takata defective airbag led to a large-scale recall of a number of car companies around the world, and now an American car company is also involved in the recall storm. According to foreign media reports, the US National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) said GM would recall 7 million vehicles worldwide because they used potentially dangerous Takata airbag gas generators.

NHTSA pointed out that GM must recall 5.9 million 2007 to 2014 trucks and SUV in the United States because the vehicle's gas generators are "exposed to high heat and humidity for a long time and are likely to explode, just like those Takata gas generators that were recalled before."

General Motors said it would recall a total of 7 million vehicles worldwide, including 544000 in Canada. The company also said that if these airbag gas generators need to be replaced, it will cost US $1.2 billion.

It is understood that the recalled models include some Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra and GMC Yukon vehicles produced in the past eight years.

In special cases, especially long-term exposure to high humidity, the defect can lead to the rupture of the airbag gas generator and the release of potentially fatal metal fragments. The defect led to the largest car recall in U. S. history, with more than 63 million gas generators recalled. Globally, about 100 million vehicles equipped with Takata gas generators from 19 major car companies have been recalled.

In 2017, Takata declared bankruptcy because of its huge debt. JSS, a subsidiary of Ningbo Junsheng Electronics, a Chinese auto parts supplier, funded the acquisition of global assets in Takata, Japan. Junsheng Electronics acquired the main assets of Takata besides its PSAN business (ammonium nitrate gas generator business).
