On November 30th, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the catalogue of recommended models for the Promotion and Application of New Energy vehicles (12th batch in 2020). We found that domestic Tesla Model Y (TSL6480BEVBA0) has been included in the catalogue of new energy vehicle models exempted from vehicle purchase tax, which means that Tesla has obtained permission to start selling the Model Y models produced by the company in Shanghai on the Chinese market.

According to the espionage photos previously exposed, as the domestic Model Y is based on the Model 3 platform, the overall body design is very similar to Model 3. From the side of the car body, the domestic Model Y adopts the hidden door handle design, and the side streamline of the car body is relatively smooth. In terms of body size, the length, width and height of Model Y are 4750/1921/1624mm, which is much larger than that of Model 3 as a whole.

In terms of power, according to the declaration information, the domestic Model Y is a dual-motor four-wheel drive version, equipped with a front / rear drive motor of the model 3D3/3D5, with a maximum power of 137and 180kW respectively, and the power battery pack is ternary lithium battery, which is expected to be replaced with lithium iron phosphate battery in the future.

Tesla's official website shows that the Model Y model has begun to accept pre-orders. There are two versions of the domestic Model Y, with a long-lasting version priced at 488000 yuan and a range of 505km (estimated by WLTP). The high-performance version of Performance costs 535000 yuan with a mileage (estimated by WLTP) 480km.

By contrast, the long-lasting all-drive version of Model Y currently shipped by Tesla in the United States starts at $43690 (about 288000 yuan) after subsidy, which is nearly 40, 000 yuan higher than the starting price of the domestic version of Model 3. This means that the current pre-price of domestic Model Y is almost twice that of domestic Model 3.

However, as the domestic Model Y is developed based on the Model 3 platform and the parts shared by the two are as high as 75%, with the deepening of Tesla's localization and exemption from purchase tax, the price of domestic Model Y is expected to fall below 400000 yuan, but the price is still relatively high for most consumers. With reference to the previous price reduction mileage of Model 3, it has dropped from the initial 350000 yuan to the current 250000 yuan. There is still room for a price reduction of 10-15% for Model Y in the future. It is recommended to start after seeing the timing clearly to avoid being cut leeks.

Recently, Tesla fell into a quality storm. Tesla applied to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to recall 9537 cars sold in the United States, involving 9136 2016 Model X and 2020 Model Y, CCTV Finance reported. The reasons for the recall include problems such as roof trim strips that may fall off while driving and faulty bolts connecting the front upper control arm and steering knuckle. It can be predicted that because Model Y has not been mass-produced in China, this defect will not affect the domestic Model Y version.

Driven by domestic Tesla, the market share of domestic new energy vehicles has been further expanded. With the domestic delivery of Model Y early next year and the development of more localization projects, Tesla still has the potential to expand in China.
