According to CCTV financial report, South Korea's Ministry of Land and Transport announced that it recalled more than 80,000 defective cars sold by Hyundai, Kia and other automobile companies in South Korea, of which more than 60% were new energy vehicles.

Hyundai recalls Hyundai KONA electric vehicle and Hyundai hydrogen-powered vehicle NEXO, Kia recalls Kia Soul electric vehicle, two car companies recall more than 50,000 defective vehicles, the reason for the recall is electric brake system software defects, may lead to brake pedal weight, or even brake failure. At the beginning of last month, it was reported that a Hyundai KONA electric car crashed into a shoulder wall after losing control due to brake failure, causing serious injuries to the driver.

Hyundai/Kia has announced recalls several times. Earlier this month, the U.S. Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Hyundai was recalling 129,000 vehicles in the United States due to engine problems, and Kia was recalling 295,000 vehicles in the United States due to engine fires, totaling 424,000 vehicles.

On Oct.12, Hyundai decided to recall its KONA electric vehicles, which involved models produced between September 2017 and March 2020. Among them, 25,600 vehicles were recalled in South Korea, 37,400 vehicles in North America, 11,100 vehicles in Europe, and 3,000 vehicles in China and other regions.

Hyundai's revenue rose 2.3% year-on-year to 27.58 trillion won in the third quarter of 2020, but its operating loss reached 313.8 billion yuan and its net loss reached 188.8 billion won, according to the financial report. Hyundai Motor said it posted a net loss in the third quarter, with results well below market expectations, as engine quality problems and recall related costs offset otherwise strong earnings.

Foreign media pointed out that Hyundai Motor announced in early October that the global recall of KONA electric vehicles will cost 600 billion won (about 3.593 billion yuan), while Hyundai Kia was fined $210 million by the US Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) earlier this month for failing to recall 1.6 million vehicles with engine defects in the US market in time. Hyundai was fined $140 million and Kia $70 million.

Since 2015, Hyundai Kia has had 31 fire-and engine-related recalls in the United States, designing more than 20 models from 2006 to 2021 and recalling more than 8.4 million vehicles, according to relevant data.

Hyundai Motor has been recalled many times because of core components such as engine and battery, among which KONA electric vehicle has been recalled twice, causing consumers to worry about the safety of new energy vehicles. It is worth mentioning that Hyundai Motor has not started corresponding recall in China in the recall event in early October, and the official has not indicated whether overseas markets are involved in this recall.
