According to the latest data released by the Federation of passengers, the retail volume of domestic narrow-sense passenger cars in 2020 was 19.288 million, down 6.8% from the same period last year; in December 2020, the retail volume of narrow-sense passenger cars was 2.288 million, up 6.6% from the same period last year.

On January 11, the ranking of passenger car manufacturers' sales volume in 2020 was officially announced. The market performance of the top ten car companies has its own joys and sorrows, and the overall change is relatively large.

Overall, the top five car companies all sold more than one million vehicles, of which FAW-Volkswagen became the only one that sold 2 million vehicles, while North-South Volkswagen and SAIC General Motors remained in the top three. Geely, Great Wall, Chang'an, SAIC GM Wuling, Chery and other car companies all made the top 15, while Honda and Toyota joint ventures showed sales growth.

The top three remain the same.

The top three car companies in terms of sales are FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC-Volkswagen and SAIC-GM. Among the three auto companies, only FAW-Volkswagen has achieved growth, while SAIC-Volkswagen and SAIC-GM have all declined, especially SAIC-Volkswagen, with a decline of double digits.

FAW-Volkswagen has Jetta, Volkswagen, Audi three major brands, covering the mainstream, low-end and luxury market, the products are relatively perfect. FAW-Volkswagen sold 2.11 million vehicles in 2020, an increase of 1.9% over the same period last year, making it the only car company to sell more than 2 million vehicles a year, according to the Federation of passengers.

Compared with FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC-Volkswagen's performance is very ugly. SAIC Volkswagen sold 1.568 million vehicles a year, down 20.3 per cent from a year earlier, according to the Federation of passengers. After being overtaken by FAW-Volkswagen in 2019, SAIC-Volkswagen was overtaken by FAW-Volkswagen again in 2020, and the latter once again won the top spot in annual passenger car sales, while the former experienced a double-digit decline.

SAIC GM is not doing very well this year. The Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac brands sold 1.407 million vehicles in 2020, down 5.1 per cent from a year earlier. Under the competition of market stock, SAIC GM entered the state of "price for volume" to maintain sales, coupled with the aggressive strategy of three-cylinder engine, resulting in a rapid decline in sales. Although the enterprise after adjustment also ushered in sales growth, but for the time being can not make up for the huge hole dug before.

The sales of independent brands are bright.

Geely's cumulative sales in 2020 were 1.248 million, down 4.3 per cent from a year earlier. Geely launched ICON, Star Rui and other new cars in 2020, coupled with the continued growth of Lecker brand sales, Geely car sales in the second half of the year has been high, but due to the impact of the epidemic in the first half, its cumulative sales are still lower than in 2019.

Changan Automobile, as an independent car company, its performance in 2020 is worthy of recognition. With Changan CS75 series, Changan Yiyou and Changan UNI-T models, Changan Automobile sales reached 942000 units in 2020, a year-on-year increase of 22.4%, making it the largest growth among the top 10 car companies.

The cumulative sales of Great Wall cars in 2020 was 836000, down 3.2 per cent from the same period last year. In the passenger car sector, Great Wall mainly relies on the Harvard brand, especially the Harvard H6 model, which accounts for more than half of the sales of the Harvard brand. In 2020, Great Wall Motor also launched models such as the Harvard Dog, the third-generation Harvard H6 and the Oulaho Cat, which contributed to the growth of sales.

In addition, Chery performed well, thanks to the continued growth in sales of Ruihu 8, which reached 515000 vehicles in 2020, making it into the top 15 of the list.

Compared with the above brands, SAIC GM Wuling fell sharply, falling 17.2 per cent year-on-year to 818000 vehicles, mainly because the passenger car sector was squeezed by Buick brands, causing Wuling Hongguang's annual sales to fall by 23.3 per cent. However, Wuling is also looking for the brand up, launch silver standard Capgemini, and make efforts in the field of mini electric vehicles, and the sales performance in 2021 is still worth looking forward to!

Japanese car companies are growing significantly.

In addition to the decline in Dongfeng Nissan, Honda Toyota joint ventures in China have achieved growth. Dongfeng Nissan's cumulative sales in 2020 were 1.212 million vehicles, down 6.3 per cent from a year earlier. Dongfeng Nissan mainly relies on Xuanyi, Teana, Qijun and Xiaoke to maintain overall sales, especially the Xuanyi model, which sold 538000 vehicles in 2020, while the other three models, Teana, Qijun and Xiaoke, sold 118000, 170000 and 158000 respectively.

Dongfeng Honda and Guangzhou Auto Honda sold 820000 and 807000 vehicles respectively, up 4.0 per cent and 5.4 per cent year-on-year. Under the hot sales of Accord, Civic, CR-V and other models, Honda's two joint ventures have achieved regular annual sales. By contrast, neither of Toyota's two joint ventures is in the top 10, but sales have also become regular.

FAW Toyota and Guangzhou Automobile Toyota both fell out of the top 10, but also achieved growth. Among them, FAW Toyota increased 8.7% to 787600 vehicles compared with the same period last year, while Guangzhou Auto Toyota increased 14.2% to 700000 vehicles, mainly due to the continued hot sales of Camry, Asian Dragon, Weilanda, Carola and other models. In 2021, Toyota will also launch a new generation of brand-new products in China, such as Hanlanda, Aolan, Ling Shang and so on, and sales are expected to grow further.

The sales of the luxury camp are bright.

Sales of Beijing Mercedes-Benz and brilliance BMW both increased. Specifically, Beijing Mercedes-Benz sold 615000 vehicles in 2020, an increase of 9.8% over the same period last year. The main best-selling products are GLC, C-Class and E-Class, and GLB is expected to become the new main sales force. Brilliance BMW sales rose 11.8% to 602000 vehicles, although sales are not as good as Beijing Mercedes-Benz, but the increase is significant, mainly relying on the 3-Series, 5-Series and X3 to maintain the overall sales level.

After 12 months of competition, the ranking of passenger car manufacturers in 2020 is finally locked. Overall, due to the epidemic and market reasons, the development showed polarization, including SAIC GM, SAIC Volkswagen, Geely, Great Wall and other car companies declined, Changan, Honda, Toyota, Beijing Mercedes-Benz, brilliance BMW and other car companies have achieved growth.
