AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)01/16 Report--

As the most mature automobile market in the world, the United States has settled in many multinational brands. As the regulations and policies of the US auto market are very strict, violations such as quality problems or "fraud" of vehicles will be severely cracked down by US regulators. Recently, the Toyota brand has no major vehicle quality and company problems, but it has been severely punished by US regulators.

Toyota has agreed to accept a $180 million (1.16 billion yuan) fine from U.S. auto regulators, the Justice Department said on Thursday, according to media reports.

The main reason is that Toyota violated the requirements of the Federal Clean Air Act (Clean Air Act). Unlike many multinational car companies that fail to recall models with quality problems in time, or "cheat" on their models to reduce carbon emissions, Toyota is due to delays in submitting emission defect reports.

With regard to the above results, Toyota has reached a settlement agreement with the government, and the company is willing to submit a compliance report every six months. At the same time, Toyota said the $180 million fine would be included in its financial results through the end of March 2021 to cover costs associated with the settlement.

In fact, it was only in 2016 that Toyota said publicly for the first time that it was under investigation for delays in submitting relevant reports to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Toyota delayed the submission of about 78 reports on emissions defects involving millions of vehicles, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. In addition, the company did not submit 20 voluntary emissions recalls, meaning Toyota failed to submit nearly 300 reports between 2005 and 2015.

Although Toyota did not penalize larger vehicles for quality problems to carmakers such as Volkswagen, Daimler and FCA, Toyota evaded regulation by failing to report mandatory information to the EPA about potential defects in its vehicles, leaving the agency unclear. EPA believes that this mistake is a serious violation of the Clean Air Act. " Sources said that this is the largest fine imposed by the US government on a car company for violating EPA emission reporting requirements.

As Toyota's largest single market, most models sell well in the United States. According to Toyota North America's latest US sales figures for 2020, Toyota and Lexus sold a record 249601 vehicles in the US in December, up 20.4 per cent from a year earlier.

This is also because Toyota, which has always been more relaxed, is more popular with consumers in the United States, and although Toyota's market share in China is also growing, it still has a larger competitor, Volkswagen.

The American automobile market has always given people a very harsh feeling, which makes many netizens think that the quality of American cars is better, because if there are more important problems, they may be fined and warned. There is no lack of netizens to compare it with domestic joint venture car companies. After all, there is a certain deviation in special models or joint venture models in China, including that the development of Chinese cars is not as mature as that of the American auto industry.
