In 2019, the market share of Chinese brand passenger cars was 37.8%. In 2020, due to the impact of the epidemic and the continued oppression of the joint venture market, independent cars also ushered in difficult times, and their market share continued to decline. In 2020, the market share of Chinese brand passenger cars was 35.7%, down 2.1 percentage points from the same period last year.
7289538 vehicles, which is the total sales of 30 independent car brands in 2020, with an average annual sales of 242985 vehicles per company. It is worth noting that this figure is based on the statistics of wholesale passenger car sales in the narrow sense of the Federation of passengers, not retail sales.
According to the statistical list, among the independent brands, only Geely has more than 1 million cars, and its monthly sales remain at more than 100000. Although annual sales are down 3.0% from the same period last year, it still achieved the adjusted annual sales target of 1.32 million vehicles. Geely mainly benefited from the growth in sales of the Lecker brand and Geely brand, launching new cars such as Haoyue, Xingrui and Lecker 06 during the year. Geely has a wait-and-see attitude towards its sales target of 1.53 million vehicles in 2021.
It is not difficult to see in the list that the top 10 car companies all sold more than 100000 vehicles, of which Changan Automobile, Chery Automobile and FAW Red Flag are the few companies that have achieved sales growth.
Changan Automobile is second only to Geely, with cumulative sales of 975600 vehicles, an increase of 21.4% over the same period last year. As one of the top ten automobile groups in China, Changan Automobile has two major passenger car brands, Changan and Auchan. At present, the main models sold are Changan CS75 series, Changan CS55 series, Changan Yitong and Changan UNI-T models. Auchan Automobile currently maintains only a small volume.
Chery mainly benefits from the continuous growth of Ruihu 8, Ruihu 5x and other models, especially Ruihu 8, which is one of the few independent brands that can compete with joint venture brands. As for FAW Hongqi, annual sales of 196700 vehicles, up 98% from the same period last year, are mainly due to the best-selling HS5 and H5 models, while sales of other models are relatively mediocre.
Other car companies, Great Wall Motor, SAIC GM Wuling, BYD and so on all declined. Although Great Wall continues to sell well with Harvard H6 models, due to the impact of the epidemic, the increase in the second half of the year is still difficult to offset the decline in the first half of the year. SAIC GM Wuling is mainly committed to the development of the MPV market, but Wuling Hongguang has suffered a particularly serious decline during the year. In the second half of the year, the brand launched Wuling Capgemini and Wuling Hongguang MINI EV. At present, the sales volume of these two models is still very considerable, and the sales performance next year is worthy of attention. As for BYD, as a leader of new energy, sales have been declining since the decline of new energy subsidies, and did not resume growth until the second half of the year, but it is still difficult to offset the downturn in the second half of the year. Sales totaled 430500 vehicles in 2020, down 7.2%, slightly higher than the market level.
In the long run, 100000 vehicles can be said to be the level of normal operation of a car company, which means that only 10 domestic car companies can maintain a qualified level of development, while other independent brands may be threatened by survival.
From the perspective of car companies other than TOP10, including Jianghuai Automobile, Dongfeng Qichen, FAW Pentium, brilliance Automobile, BAIC New Energy and other car companies, sales fell slightly higher, all more than 30 per cent. After FAW Pentium achieved sales of 100000 vehicles in 2019, due to the epidemic and product reasons in 2020, the cumulative sales of this year was only 73200 vehicles, a decline of 35.2%. In the second half of the year, FAW Pentium launched the B70 model, which sold only 2787 cars in the first two months of the market.
Brilliance, an established automaker, halved its sales in 2020 and is now facing huge debts and has been ruled by the court to go bankrupt and reorganized. BAIC New Energy, another car company, won the title of pure electric sales for seven years in a row, but it also plummeted after the decline in new energy subsidies in 2019, falling by as much as 82.8% in 2020.
Of course, although the volume of car brands is less than 100000, but as a newly established brand, the sales volume in 2020 is still considerable. NIO and Xiaopeng rose 112.6% and 62.6%, ideally 3070.5%, mainly because they did not deliver new cars until the end of 2019. In addition, there has also been an increase in Weima and Hezhong.
Under the general trend of the market, more and more car brands are dying and no longer disclose sales data, including BAIC Yinxiang, Zhongtai Automobile, Huatai Automobile, Cheetah Motor and so on. Under the background of the upward development of Geely, Great Wall, Chang'an and other automobile enterprises, this cruel reality seems to be inevitable in history. Without the unsustainable support of weak brands, it will not be able to set off the crisis of the market. The process is painful, but the results will also be expected.
