Data show that in May 1993, Changan Automobile and Suzuki Co., Ltd. of Japan jointly established Chongqing Changan Suzuki Automobile Co., Ltd., and launched a number of small cars, such as Otto and Swift, which are highly sought after by consumers and are known as the "king of cars." Data show that from 2008 to 2011, Changan Suzuki sales were 102500, 150100, 200000 and 220000 respectively. It can be seen that Changan Suzuki's sales in the domestic market continued to grow and reached an all-time peak in 2011.

However, when the domestic market began to launch larger car products, Suzuki did not follow up in time, and sales continued to fall since 2012, eventually losing out to China. In 2012, Changan Suzuki sales fell 26.42 per cent year-on-year to 170000 vehicles, according to the data. Since then, in addition to the year-on-year growth in 2014, Changan Suzuki sales have continued to decline. Overall sales of Changan Suzuki fell to 115300 in 2016, 83900 in 2017 and only 34500 in 2018.

In September 2018, due to continued losses in performance, Suzuki eventually transferred its 50% stake in Changan Suzuki to Changan Automobile at a symbolic price of 1 yuan, and Changan Suzuki changed from a joint venture company to a wholly owned subsidiary of Changan Automobile, marking the official launch of Suzuki Motor in China. However, since the agreement between Suzuki and Changan does not end until 2022, Changan Suzuki can still produce, sell and hang models with Suzuki logo.

Although the Suzuki brand has been temporarily retained, but its models can not be updated, and all meet the national five emission standards, basically completely suspended sales, Changan Suzuki official website has also been closed. At present, Changan Suzuki has two complete vehicle factories in Chongqing, which mainly produce Qiyue taxis, but the capacity utilization rate is very low. Data show that Changan Suzuki sold 15152 vehicles in 2020 and 452 in January 2021, all of which are Suzuki Qiyue models.

After Suzuki withdrew, Changan Automobile has introduced some of its own models into Changan Suzuki Factory in order to invigorate its production capacity, and will put into production more self-branded models in the future.

After withdrawing from the Chinese market, Suzuki switched to the Indian market. But Suzuki is also having a hard time in the Indian market. Suzuki achieved operating income of 215.1 billion yen in fiscal 2019, down 33.7% from a year earlier, while net profit attributed to the parent company was 134.2 billion yen, down 24.9% from a year earlier, according to the financial report. Suzuki forecasts operating revenue of 160 billion yen in fiscal 2020, down 25.6% from a year earlier, while net profit attributable to the parent company is 110 billion yen, down 18.0% from a year earlier.
