A few days ago, at the launching ceremony of the 5 millionth car of FAW-Volkswagen Chengdu Branch, Xiu Junyi, Party Committee Secretary of FAW-Volkswagen Chengdu Branch / Jetta Brand and General Manager of Chengdu Branch, revealed that in addition to Jetta brand updating existing models and launching more new models in the future, it is also possible to cancel the VA3 model based on PQ25L platform and transform to electrification in the future. This means that Jetta will also reposition the brand.
According to the plan, the future two SUV models, the VS5 and VS7, will continue to be revamped and replaced. At the same time, the brand will also launch new sedan products, but will be based on the Volkswagen MQB modular platform, the name will no longer use VA3, and the elimination of the PQ25L platform means that the VA3 model may be discontinued.
After all, the PQ25L platform does not keep up with the times, and the reason why VA3 was built on the PQ25 platform was due to cost. It is reported that in the PQ25 platform, P represents the front-drive layout, Q represents the horizontal engine, "2" represents the A0-class small car, and 5 refers to the fifth generation. For example, SAIC-Volkswagen's old POLO and Skoda-Jingrui are using this platform, but Skoda has also considered stopping production of the Jingrui model, which means that Volkswagen finally hopes to achieve brand competition through product upgrades, after all, the advantage of the Volkswagen brand is gradually diminishing.
It is understood that the Jetta brand has been listed independently since the end of 2019, and has launched three models, namely, the compact car VA3, the compact SUVVS5, and the VS7 of medium-sized SUV.
At first, with the help of the launch of two models, Jetta reached more than 10,000 in its first month on the market, and then sales continued to soar, reaching 12800 by relying on VS5 alone in January 2020. It was thought that the development of the brand could still be supported by the "old three" of Volkswagen, that is, without the target Jetta of Volkswagen, but after the launch of the third model, the VS7, which was affected by the epidemic in February last year, the brand seemed to have lost its halo after achieving a certain rebound.
The data show that in the whole of 2020, the Jetta brand established with three models completed 14200 vehicles, an increase of 8% over the same period last year, accounting for only 5.88% of FAW-Volkswagen brand sales, which is a far cry from the original target of annual sales of 200000 vehicles. It can be said that the sense of existence is very low. Even this achievement is not as good as the single model sales of Jetta in Volkswagen. Data show that Jetta model sales reached 317600 in 2017. It grew to 327700 in 2018.
After all, with the rise of domestic brands, the era of sales through joint ventures has passed, so that joint venture brands without core competitiveness are also seeking brand breakthroughs. If some joint venture brands still want to rely on brand sinking to compete with domestic independent brands, they must not rely on the residual heat of old models to play, more should reflect their sincerity in the core technology.
On electrification, Xiu Junyi also said that the Jetta brand is committed to the development of electrified models, and is expected to usher in plug-in or pure electric models in the future, which is also in line with the current electrified transformation trend of the Volkswagen brand.
