On April 9, the Federation released its latest sales report that retail sales in the passenger car market reached 1.752 million units in March 2021, up 67.2% from March 2020 and 0.2% from March 2019. Affected by the 2020 epidemic, it still maintained a large growth rate in March this year, but from a month-on-month point of view, the average growth rate over the past years is basically the same, which means that the market is back to a period of calm.
In fact, new energy vehicles have set a new record for that month for nine months in a row. The new energy market as a whole has maintained a relatively strong performance this year. According to the Federation of passengers, wholesale sales of new energy passenger vehicles reached 202000 in March, up 101.1% from February and 261.3% from the same period last year, showing a good trend of independent growth. Of these, the wholesale sales of pure electric vehicles were 169000, up 252.2% from the same period last year; plug-in hybrid sales were 33000, up 313.3% from the same period last year, accounting for 16.6%.
The Federation said that sales of new energy vehicles are expected to reach 2 million in 2021, with a high start and a better-than-expected month-on-month trend, mainly due to the pull of new products. In fact, the high growth in the second half of the year is mainly driven by new products for private consumption.
Specifically, the sales of high and low end models of electric vehicles increased strongly in March, of which the wholesale sales of A00 class reached 67000, and the share of pure electric vehicles reached 40%. The share of pure electric A-class electric vehicles accounted for 20% of pure electric vehicles, which was at the bottom of recent years; the number of B-class electric vehicles reached 52000, up 79% from February, and the share of pure electric vehicles was 31%, showing a strong performance.
Among them, SAIC GM Wuling, Tesla, BYD and many other new energy vehicle companies, such as Wuling Hongguang MINI, BYD Han, Tesla Model 3 and new power enterprises and many other accurate positioning, subdivided into Wang's new products, played an important role in promoting. These new energy models at both ends of the price band are very low dependent on subsidies, mainly driven by market demand.
As a result, SAIC GM Wuling 41491 vehicles, of which Wuling Hongguang MINI production reached 40084, production and sales reached an all-time high. Now with the arrival of the Hongguang MINI EV macaron version, it has helped the car usher in a new wave of outbreaks, and even once became the world's highest monthly sales of new energy models.
Even though Tesla encountered a lot of "gossip", the sales data released by the Federation showed that Tesla sold as many as 35478 vehicles in March, up 93% from the 18318 in February, indicating that Tesla was not affected by the market. However, this is also due to the large-scale delivery of domestic Tesla Model Y, which makes Tesla's domestic sales soar.
At the same time, BYD, another new energy vehicle mentioned by the Carriage Association, realized 23906 New year energy models during March. According to the financial data released by BYD, new energy sold 24218 vehicles in March.
In the same period last year, it was 12256, an increase of 97.6% over the same period last year. Cumulative sales from January to March reached 54751, an increase of 146.72 per cent over the same period last year. The gap between the two is not too big, which also shows that BYD's new energy models once again surpass fuel models, further reflecting the strong performance of the new energy market.
In addition, 46000 ordinary hybrid passenger vehicles were wholesale in March, an increase of 202% over March last year, which also shows the determination of traditional fuel car companies to gradually transform.
The Federation pointed out that the domestic retail penetration rate of new energy vehicles in March was 10.5%. The penetration rate from January to March was 8.6%, which was significantly higher than the 5.8% penetration rate in 2020. In this regard, Xu Haidong, deputy chief engineer of the China Automobile Association, also said that the better performance of new energy vehicle production and sales in the first quarter of this year is inseparable from two key factors: one is the joint efforts of domestic and foreign automobile companies, new energy vehicle products are more and more able to meet the needs of consumers, and the other is that private consumers' acceptance of new energy vehicle products is gradually increasing.
At the same time, based on this, the association remains optimistic about the sales performance of new energy vehicles for the whole year, and the annual sales target of 1.8 million vehicles mentioned by the China Automobile Association at the beginning of the year remains unchanged for the time being.
