AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)04/24 Report--
The shortage of chips continues to increase, and this problem has gradually affected domestic automakers. According to several media reports, Great Wall Motor has encountered capacity bottlenecks due to chip supply shortages, and its two major production bases, Yongchuan in Chongqing and Xushui in Baoding, will stop production from May to June. Affected by this, many of the main selling models of Great Wall will be affected, including the Harvard H6, the Great Wall Gun and the Tank 300.
Data show that Xushui base is the largest independent brand production base in China, with a total planned area of 13 million square meters, a total investment of more than 30 billion yuan, and a planned annual production capacity of 1 million vehicles. The models produced by Xushui base include Harvard H6 Coupe, Harvard H8, Harvard H9, Harvard H2 and Harvard H7, Harvard H6, WEY VV5, Harvard H4 and so on. Yongchuan base is the fourth vehicle base of Great Wall Automobile in China, with an investment of 8 billion yuan and a planned annual production capacity of 250000 vehicles, mainly producing Great Wall Gun series pickup trucks, Harvard H9, tanks and other models.
If the news is true, Great Wall will become the second independent carmaker to announce a suspension of production after NIO Motor, and the first time a domestic carmaker has stopped production on multiple production lines. As of press time, however, Great Wall officials had not responded to the reports.
At the Shanghai auto show, the four major brands of Great Wall brought a number of brand new models, including WEY Mocha, Euler Lightning Cat, Euler Big Cat, Euler Punk Cat, Harvard Red Rabbit, New concept car Harvard XY, Harvard 2.0T, Great Wall full-size pickup trucks, Great Wall artillery, Great Wall travel gun, Great Wall cross-country running and other products. At the same time, the Great Wall tank brand announced its official independence and developed two major product series of business luxury and mecha technology, including the flagship model of the tank 700 positioning machine A series and the flagship model of the tank 800 positioning business luxury series. In the future, the tank brand will launch more models, covering full-size, medium-to-large and compact SUV.
Great Wall Motor will launch a number of new models in the future, with more new models to open the market, laying the foundation for this year's sales. However, the chip supply problem has added a lot of unknowns to Great Wall's expansion, or caused Great Wall's performance to fall short of expectations. According to the interface news from dealers, the current sales channels of a number of best-selling models are not available, delivery time is uncertain, users may have to wait for months.
Chip outage has become a global industry problem, which has had a certain impact on global automakers, and has gradually affected the domestic market. Prior to this, some SAIC-Volkswagen models were phased out of production. SAIC-Volkswagen said that at this stage, it will optimize production scheduling according to market demand, giving priority to ensuring the production capacity of products with high market demand. SAIC Volkswagen said it would coordinate with Volkswagen China and suppliers around the world to optimize the allocation of resources as much as possible, hoping to fill the gap in the coming months. A week ago, China Business reported that FAW-Volkswagen Audi would cut production by 30% in April. Referring to FAW-Volkswagen-Audi sales in March, it would cut production by more than 20,000 vehicles in April.
In contrast, the impact of chip shortage on overseas car companies is more obvious, including Ford, FCA, Nissan, Honda, Toyota, GM, Daimler, Volvo and other car companies have announced that production will be stopped or reduced due to chip shortage. Judging from the current situation of the major automobile companies in the world, the problem of chip shortage is difficult to be solved in a short period of time, and this problem has a tendency to gradually spread to China.
Industry insiders said that as the chip shortage is expected to last until at least the second half of this year, carmakers should seek to diversify their chip supply and actively adjust their production strategies. In addition, automakers should also strengthen cooperation with chip manufacturers and the government to strengthen the research and development of automotive semiconductor technology and reduce their dependence on external technology and supply.
