According to the latest report released by the Federation of passengers on May 11, the retail volume of narrow passenger cars in China was 1.608 million in April 2021, up 12.4 percent from April 2020, 6.5 percent from April 2019, and 8.3 percent lower than March 2021. From January to April, retail sales of narrow passenger cars totaled 6.702 million, an increase of 50.7 percent over the same period last year. The ultra-high increase was mainly due to the low base effect of the cumulative decline of 32.7 percent in the national passenger car market from January to April 2020.

Judging from the sales data released by the Federation, due to the low base caused by the epidemic last year, a number of domestic car companies still achieved strong growth in April, but the ranking of the top 10 domestic car companies has also been adjusted. FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC-Volkswagen and Geely car sales have all declined in the list.

Judging from the ranking, the top three car companies are still FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC General Motors and SAIC Volkswagen, of which FAW-Volkswagen sales reached 159000 vehicles, although there was a 1.7 per cent decline, but still led the domestic passenger car market, far higher in sales than SAIC GM, which ranked second. As for SAIC GM and SAIC Volkswagen, as joint venture brands of SAIC Group, SAIC GM led SAIC Volkswagen several times this year. This month, SAIC GM exceeded SAIC Volkswagen with 116000 vehicles, of which SAIC GM increased by 13.6% compared with the same period last year. SAIC-Volkswagen fell 18.7%. FAW-Volkswagen and SAIC-Volkswagen have both declined and are expected to be affected by chip supply.

Let's take a look at our own brands. Changan Automobile, Geely Automobile and SAIC GM Wuling all appeared on the list, while Great Wall fell out of the top 10. Chang'an once again led Geely in sales, rising 48.7 per cent year-on-year to 98000 vehicles in the month, making it the highest-selling car company of its own brands. Changan Automobile mainly benefited from the hot sales of the CS75 series, Changan Yitou, CS55 series and UNI series. It is understood that the monthly sales of CS75 were 23800, Changan Yichi 16200 and CS55 11500.

Geely's sales performance is not optimistic, with sales of 92000 vehicles in April, down 9.2% from a year earlier, making it the only independent brand on the list to decline. Geely did not release detailed sales figures for any of the models on its social media account, which means the results are not good-looking. According to data released by Geely, cumulative sales from January to April were 433900, 28% of the annual sales target of 1.53 million, which means that Geely needs to sell 137000 vehicles a month in the remaining eight months. According to the current state of Geely, the completion rate of the annual sales target is relatively slim.

As for SAIC GM Wuling, sales rose 36.6 per cent to 71000 vehicles in April from a year earlier, with most of its sales coming from Hongguang MINIEV. However, according to recent media reports, new energy vehicles with a length of less than 100000 yuan or less than 4.6m will no longer be able to apply for a free new energy "green card" in Shanghai. Although Hongguang MINIEV accounts for a relatively low proportion of sales in Shanghai, it still has a certain impact. Of course, the above contents are true or false and the specific contents of the new policy still need to be officially announced.

The rest are Japanese brands. The retail volume of Dongfeng Nissan in April was 102000, up 4.5% from a year earlier, mainly relying on four models: Xuanyi, Teana, Qijun and Xiaoke. As the main sales model, the new generation of Qijun will be launched in July, with a 1.5T three-cylinder + CVT powertrain. It is understood that the new Qijun listing will not adopt the new and old sales strategy, the old models will be out of stock to withdraw from the market. In other words, three-cylinder Qijun will replace the four-cylinder Qijun on sale in cash, consumers can only buy three-cylinder Qijun brand-new model, as for the performance of three-cylinder Qijun in the market, with reference to cash in the sale of Leiling, it mainly has 1.2T four cylinders and 1.5L three cylinders, although 1.5L power performance is better, but consumers are still more willing to choose 1.2T. Data show that Leiling sold 14950 vehicles in March, of which 12564 were sold at 1.2T and 2386 at 1.5L.

Honda only had Dongfeng Honda in the top 10, with year-on-year sales growth of 54.3% to 85000 vehicles. Dongfeng Honda's Civic, CR-V, XR-V and other models performed well. Guangzhou Auto Toyota and FAW Toyota sold 69000 and 65000 vehicles respectively, up 30.2 per cent and 1.1 per cent respectively from a year earlier.

The above is a list of the top 10 car companies. Overall, based on last year's market, it is expected that a number of car companies achieved year-on-year growth in the first quarter and even the first half of the year. However, the insufficient supply of chips still affects the production scheduling of manufacturers, which is not conducive to retail increment.
