AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)05/15 Report--

Retail sales of luxury brands in April 2021 were 245720 vehicles, up 26.7% from a year earlier, according to the Federation of passengers. Cumulative retail sales from January to April were 979251 vehicles, an increase of 68.3% over the same period last year. Compared with mainstream joint venture brands and independent brands, luxury brands still outperform the market.

From the perspective of the top 10 luxury brands in sales, almost all brands have achieved growth. BMW Mercedes-Benz Audi occupies the top three positions, Lexus returns to the first place of second-tier luxury brands, and Tesla drops seriously and is even overtaken by Volvo. Red Flag is the only Chinese brand on the list.

As a first-tier luxury brand, BBA still leads the luxury market. According to the data, the BMW brand sold 77351 vehicles in April, Mercedes-Benz sold 73481 and Audi sold 71267. The total sales of the three brands were 222099, accounting for 63.5 per cent of the total market share.

According to the data, Mercedes-Benz won the top monthly sales with 77400 vehicles, while BMW sold 73500 vehicles, a gap of nearly 4000 vehicles. As for the Audi brand, it still ranks third, with monthly sales of 71300 vehicles, a big gap with the Mercedes-Benz brand.

In terms of specific models, the BMW 3-Series is the best-selling model in the BBA brand, with April sales of 18711, Audi A6L and Mercedes-Benz C-Class 16868 and 16653 respectively. In addition, Audi Q5L, Mercedes-Benz GLCs, BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class all sold more than 15000 vehicles.

Lexus performed best among second-tier luxury brands, selling 23000 vehicles in April, making it the only second-tier luxury brand to sell more than 20, 000 vehicles a month. Cadillac uses a price-for-volume sales strategy in the market, but even so, it is still inferior to Lexus, with sales of 19600 vehicles in April, a certain gap with Lexus.

Red Flag sold 17400 vehicles in April, up 63.1% from a year earlier. Red Flag HS5 is the best performing luxury brand in China, with April sales of 8435, Red Flag H5 4911 and Red Flag H9 2112.

Volvo sales fell slightly in April, down 0.5 per cent from a year earlier to 15200 vehicles, making it the only brand on the list to decline. Of all the models, only Volvo XC60 sold more than 5000, while other models all sold less than 5000. Volvo's board of directors is reported to have decided to re-evaluate the possibility of IPO and is expected to list on Sweden's Stockholm Stock Exchange later this year. However, the final decision on listing depends on the market environment, and there is no guarantee that the listing will take place.

Tesla sold only 11972 vehicles in April, up 158.4% from the same period last year, but down sharply from the previous month. At present, Tesla has two domestic models, Model 3 and Model Y, on sale in China, with sales of 6440 and 5516 respectively in April.

In April this year, the rights incident at the Shanghai auto show pushed Tesla to the forefront of the storm, and related incidents continued to be exposed, which triggered consumers' concerns about Tesla's products. Judging from the sales volume in April, the auto show rights incident did affect the sales of Tesla Model 3, but whether it is the decisive factor in the sharp decline in Model 3, we need to wait for the data in May and June to further confirm the relationship between the two. As for the decline in Model Y sales, the media reported that the Shanghai superfactory Model Y production line was suspended for two weeks in April to upgrade production line equipment, resulting in fluctuations in sales.

In ninth place was Porsche, which sold 9863 vehicles in April, up 15.7% from a year earlier, including 4221 Macan models, 1994 Panamera and 1959 Cayenne. As for Jaguar Land Rover, it sold 8816 vehicles in April, up 25.95 per cent from a year earlier.

Generally speaking, under the influence of the stock competition in the domestic market, the brand camp in the luxury car market is basically formed. BMW Mercedes-Benz Audi is a first-tier luxury brand, Lexus, Cadillac, Red Flag and Volvo are second-tier luxury brands, accelerating product and technology competition, and Lincoln maintains steady sales growth. Jaguar Land Rover, Infiniti, Acura and other brands remain in the doldrums and are on the edge of the market.
