According to the latest statistics of the Association, the retail sales volume of medium-sized cars in April 2021 was 208,000, with a year-on-year growth of 28.3%. Although the market share was not as good as that of compact cars, the performance of medium-sized cars was still very strong compared with the market performance of compact cars falling by 7.2% year-on-year.
Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Magotan, Nissan Teana and other mainstream joint venture medium-sized cars have a stable position, BMW 3 Series, Audi A4L, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and other luxury medium-sized cars continue to sell well, becoming frequent visitors in the top ten list. Faced with the market squeeze of mainstream joint venture mid-size cars and luxury mid-size cars, the sales volume of second-and third-line joint ventures and autonomous mid-size cars has not improved much even if they adopt the price-for-volume method.
In April 2021, the market ranking of mid-range cars changed greatly, and the sales volume of many models declined. BMW 3 Series maintained the first place in sales volume, and the domestic Tesla Model 3 fell out of the top ten from the first place in March.
In terms of sales volume, there are more than ten thousand vehicles in eight models, including BMW 3 Series, Honda Accord, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Magotan, Audi A4L, Nissan Teana and Toyota Asian Dragon. Honda Accord, which ranked second in April sales, sold 16777 units, down 2563 units from March sales, but still ranked second because other models fell more sharply.
BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4L are relatively stable. BMW ranks first with 17380 vehicles and Mercedes-Benz ranks third with 16166 vehicles. The sales volume of BMW 3 Series is basically flat compared with March, while Mercedes-Benz C-Class increases, further narrowing the gap with BMW 3 Series. By contrast, the Audi A4L sold 15487 units, dropping to sixth place from fifth last month.
Toyota Camry sales were 15975 in April and 13032 in March, rising from eighth to fourth place. Toyota Asia Dragon and Nissan Teana performed reasonably well, selling 10889 and 12035 vehicles respectively in April, roughly the same as in March. In addition, Buick Regal and Volkswagen Passat sales increased from March to 9801 and 8685 respectively, but still not more than 10,000.
Looking at models outside the top 10, Tesla Model 3 ranked 11th with 6264 vehicles. Tesla Model 3 sales fell sharply in April, ranking first with 25327 vehicles in March, and falling out of the top 10 in April, arguably the worst model on the list.
After the ranking, almost the world of second-tier and third-tier brands, most models are competitive in exchange for sales. Among them, Chevrolet MaiRuiBao XL, which has huge terminal price reduction, has almost no room to sink again. In April, it realized growth through price-for-volume exchange, with sales volume of 4894 vehicles. Sales of Mazda Atz, which used to be strong, fell sharply, from 4635 in March to 2719 in April.
The sales volume of Korean brand Hyundai Kia is not optimistic. In 2020, new cars such as Sonata, Mingtu and K5 Kaiku will be launched, but the sales performance is not good. Data show that Kia Kaiku sales in April were 1010, Sonata and Mingtu were 719 and 651 respectively. American brands Ford Mondeo and Taurus also performed well, with Mondeo sales of 1666 and Taurus sales of 916, down from March. The Peugeot 508L and Citroen C6 continued their depressed market performance with only 495 and 322 vehicles.
Among its own brands, Hongqi H5 is the highest-selling model, with sales of 5035 vehicles in April. The worst model is BEIJING U7, with sales of only 22 vehicles in April, 99 vehicles accumulated from January to April, and monthly sales of about 20 vehicles.
The mid-level car is the mainstream joint venture brand's volume model and brand support model. From the list, we can determine the trend of a brand in the market. Germany and Japan continue to occupy a large share, the American series is supported by preferential treatment, and the Korean series and legal system are on the edge of danger. It is difficult for independent brands to compete with joint venture brands.
