AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)05/25 Report--
The shortage of chips continues to increase, and many car companies have announced to stop or reduce production because of the lack of supply of chips. this problem has affected domestic automakers. FAW-Volkswagen originally planned to produce about 610000 cars in the second quarter of this year, but due to a shortage of chips, it is expected to produce only 400000 vehicles in the second quarter, a 30 per cent reduction, according to China Finance and Economics.
China Finance and Economics quoted FAW-Volkswagen insiders as saying, "according to the information given by the German headquarters CKD department and suppliers, major MQB models in April and May are facing suspension of production, including Volkswagen and Audi brands." The internal strategy is to give priority to Audi, not affected by chip resources to maximize the production of models, to make up for production losses. "
According to the production plan, the parts that FAW-Volkswagen is most affected by the chip shortage are steering gear, CKD gateway controller, ESP (body electronic stabilization system), 10.1in display, door controller, 8-inch LCD instrument, mechanical instrument, radio, air conditioning control unit, air conditioning controller and Volkswagen's Tianjin gearbox company produces a total of 11 parts of DQ381 gearbox, all of which have supply problems. The above 11 parts affect the production of a number of models, including Audi A3, A4L, A6L, Q5L, Volkswagen Maiteng, Golf, Bora, Suiteng, Tanyue, Jetta VS5, VS7, VA5,ID4.X, ID6.X and so on a total of 29 models. It is reported that at present, only 14 FAW-Volkswagen models can be produced continuously, but in order to make up for the production loss, the 14 models that are not affected will maximize production and give priority to the supply of universal parts to Audi models with higher profits. In addition, the old MQB platform and PQ platform models are less affected by chips, FAW-Volkswagen will speed up the production of the above platform models to make up for production losses.
However, as of press time, FAW-Volkswagen did not respond to the above reports.
According to the FIFA data, FAW-Volkswagen brand production in April was 63900, down 40.7% from the same period last year; Audi brand production was 60300, up 10% from the same period last year; and Jetta brand production was 36100, up 169.3% from the same period last year. Among them, Bora's April production was 16500, down 53.1% from the same period last year; Suiteng was 8400, down 67.6% from the same period last year; and Tange was 2800, down 53.4% from the same period last year. The biggest decline was in Volkswagen's CC, which produced just 743 vehicles in April, down 82.4 per cent from a year earlier.
In the past few months, the global shortage of automotive chips has dealt a heavy blow to many carmakers. According to research by AlixPartners, the global shortage of semiconductor chips will continue to cause serious damage to the automotive business, with a total revenue loss of not less than US $110 billion in 2021, which is expected to affect the production of at least 3.9 million vehicles. However, as TSMC, Samsung, SMIC and other manufacturers announce production expansion, the situation of lack of cores in cars is expected to improve in the future, but as it still takes time to expand production capacity and superimpose factors such as complex chip manufacturing processes, short-term disturbances will continue. With the subsequent adjustment and release of chip manufacturers, the lack of cores in cars may be gradually alleviated.
