Yesterday, Honda China released its May sales figures via Weibo. Honda's terminal car sales in China in May 2021 were 128713, down 4.1% from 134230 in May last year and sharply lower than the month-on-month decline in April 2021, when the market was in a special period affected by the epidemic. On the contrary, the figures for this year have declined, even slightly, reflecting that Honda is under some pressure in the Chinese market.

This month's decline is caused by a number of internal and external factors, which are related to record sales in April. Honda's sales in China continued to climb to 149423 last month, up 31.7% from a year earlier, setting an all-time high for Honda's single-month sales in April.

Among Honda's two joint venture partners in China, Guangzhou Auto Honda sold 62373 vehicles in May, with a cumulative sales of 306983 from January to May, while Dongfeng Honda sold 66340 in May and 361384 from January to May. From January to May this year, Honda sold 668367 terminal cars in China, compared with 142.3% in the same period.

Honda sold 128713 terminal vehicles in China in May 2021, and Honda this month emphasized a total of 20087 hybrid models, of which 96877 were sold in the first five months of the hybrid model, compared with 179.7% in the same period.

Honda is also affected by the chip shortage faced by the entire automotive industry. As early as the end of last year, an insider from Guangzhou Auto Honda said in an interview with the media: at present, Guangzhou Auto Honda's production of cars is limited because of a shortage of chips, and some models are cut off. At the same time, Honda said it would reduce production in Japan due to the shortage of global car chips. These limited chips were allocated to models that Honda considered more important, and the situation did not improve further in March. Honda's factories in China are believed to be under similar pressure because of temporary shutdowns at several of Honda's overseas plants, which have affected capacity.

Comparing the sales figures of Honda's two joint ventures in 2019-2021, we can find that Guangzhou Auto Honda's sales fell sharply in May 2021, which is an important factor leading to the decline in Honda's sales figures in China.

Feido's poor sales performance directly led to a 10.1% year-on-year decline in Guangzhou Auto Honda's sales. Sales of the civilian supercar have been declining since 2021, with total sales of just 14101 vehicles in the first four months of this year, compared with 2248 in April. On the one hand, the scheduling problem makes some configurations lack of stock, on the other hand, the lowest configuration model priced at 81800 yuan has no radio, no horn, and no wiper. With the emergence of more competitors at the same price, the price advantage is no longer obvious. The combination of the two makes its sales volume naturally unpopular.

The life, its brother model in Dongfeng Honda, faces a similar fate, with sales of 861 in March 2021 and 315 in April.
