Recently, foreign new energy vehicle media released global new energy vehicle sales data from January to May 2021. It is important to note that this data counts electric products, including pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. According to the data, the top three brands in sales in the first five months of this year were Tesla, SAIC General Motors Wuling and Volkswagen. BYD finished catching up with BMW and ranked fourth.

At the top of the list is Tesla, who leads many brands by an absolute advantage. From January to May 2021, the cumulative sales of new energy vehicles were 276459, of which Tesla Model 3/Model Y sold 172672 and 101674 respectively. At present, Tesla's two largest markets in the world are the US market and the Chinese market. Tesla's cumulative sales in China from January to May 2021 were 128588 vehicles, accounting for 46.51% of the total global sales. The Chinese market accounts for nearly half of the total global sales, which means that nearly half of Tesla's products are purchased by Chinese consumers, which indirectly reflects the importance of the Chinese market to Tesla.

The sales volume of SAIC GM Wuling is second only to Tesla, with cumulative sales of 161610 vehicles from January to May in 2021. The main product is Hongguang MINIEV. As a product of positioning minicar, Hongguang MINEV has been concerned and favored by consumers since its launch, and has topped the list of new energy models in the domestic market for many months. Data show that from January to May in 2021, Hongguang MINIEV accumulated sales of 152667 vehicles, compared with the No. 1 Tesla Model 3 only 20, 000 vehicles gap. Of course, although there is only a 20, 000 gap between the Crown MINIEV and the Tesla Model 3, Tesla is a global brand and does not rely solely on the Chinese market, so it will be difficult for Hongguang MINIEV to surpass Tesla Model 3 this year.

In third place is Volkswagen, which sold 118856 new energy vehicles worldwide in May 2021. Volkswagen relies mainly on the ID.4 and ID.3 electric vehicles, which sold 26271 and 23939 respectively in the first five months. Compared with other new energy vehicle products, Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 sales are still relatively low, with an average monthly sales of about 5000 vehicles, and then specific to the major markets, actually monthly sales are only about 1000 vehicles. Of course, it should be noted that Volkswagen's two electric cars have not been on the market for a long time, coupled with the current shortage of chips, the poor performance of these two products is understandable.

In addition to Tesla, SAIC GM Wuling and Volkswagen, BYD and BMW also sold more than 100000 new energy vehicles, 110427 and 105419 respectively. In terms of specific products, BYD EV sold 32865 vehicles in the first five months, ranking fourth, while BMW 530e/Le sold 22441 vehicles.

The sixth to tenth brands are Mercedes, Volvo, SAIC, Audi and Peugeot, with sales of 88186, 75763, 73086, 60764 and 49661 respectively. Since then, the sales gap between brands has been relatively small, with 48661 from Kia, 48627 from Renault and 43960 from Toyota, with Skoda at the bottom of the list, with cumulative new energy vehicle sales of 26061 in the previous five months. Specifically, the products with better performance are mainly Great Wall Euler Black Cats (25503), Hyundai KONA EV (24914), Guangzhou Automobile AION S (24540), Renault Zoe (22987), Chery eQ (21719) and so on.

In particular, the media warned that carmakers outside TOP20 now account for 23% of the total market, up from 19% in 2020. What are the companies other than the top 20? For example, Changan Automobile, Porsche, Xiaopeng Automobile, ideal car.

Judging from the current situation, China has become the main battlefield for major automobile brands to develop new energy products, including Volkswagen, BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, etc., but in the short term, domestic new energy is still dominated by Chinese brands, including traditional brands such as BYD, Great Wall, Guangzhou Automobile and SAIC, as well as new car-building brands such as Lulai, ideal, Xiaopeng, Nezha, etc. In this case, traditional car companies need to invest more in the development of technology, while the forerunners will continue to maintain an advantage in their own battle lines.
