On July 17, the mid-term modified SAIC Volkswagen Passat model was unveiled at the 2021 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Auto Show. As a medium-term revamped model, the new car has made major changes to its appearance and offers two different styles of front face styling for the first time. It is understood that the new car is expected to go on sale in September.

As a medium-term revamped model, the new Passat has made more adjustments to its appearance, mainly focused on the front and rear. From the point of view of the appearance, the new car follows the multi-spoke intake grille design, and the number of chromium-plated strips inside the intake grille increases, showing a matrix horizontal arrangement. Compared with the current model, the new VW Passat grille chrome-plated decorative strip is connected to the left and right headlights. At the same time, the car also made adjustments to the headlights and front bumper style. In the rear part of the car, the new Volkswagen Passat is equipped with a brand-new style taillight with a through-through design with a "PASSAT" English logo between the taillights. In terms of body size, the length, width and height of the new car is 4948/1836/1469mm, and the wheelbase is 2871mm. Compared with the two Passat models, the length of the new car increases by 15mm, while the other dimensions remain unchanged.

As for the PHEV model, the new Passat PHEV also adjusts the headlight group, front enclosure and taillights, and marks the PHEV logo on the front, front fender and rear details to highlight the identity of the plug-in hybrid.

Compared with the appearance, the new Passat has made relatively small changes in interior decoration, still using the layout of the current model, and changing only for details, such as interior color matching, atmosphere lights, working materials and configuration, etc. but the mechanical gear lever has not changed.

In terms of power, it is still equipped with 1.4T and 2.0T high and low power powertrain, and the maximum power of 1.4T engine is 110kwt 2.0T engine high and low power is 162kw and 137kw respectively, matched by a 7-speed double clutch gearbox. As for the PHEV model, it uses a hybrid power system composed of 1.4T engine and motor.

As we all know, Passat is a "fierce general" in the domestic medium-sized car market, leading Toyota Camry and Honda Accord all the year round, with monthly sales of nearly 30,000 vehicles at its peak. However, after the Baoyan crash test results came out in mid-2019, Passat's sales continued to decline, that is, it reapplied for the crash test and achieved good results, but there was no significant improvement in sales. In order to save sales, Passat's market discount is as high as 40,000 to 50,000 yuan, barely keeping Passat's sales results from being too ugly.

Passat's competitors include Maiteng, Accord, Camry, Tianlei and other models. At present, the medium-term change Maiteng has been listed in 2019, the medium-term change Camry went public in February this year, and the new Accord is expected to be released in the third quarter of this year, so the medium-sized car market will also usher in a "new battle" in the future. According to sales figures, Passat sold 60483 vehicles in the first half, Accord 94735, Maiteng 87490 and Camry 92992. It can be seen that, as a former "fierce general" of B-class cars, Passat's current performance is far inferior to Accord, Maiteng and other models. SAIC-Volkswagen is about to launch a medium-term revamped Passat, which will make substantial adjustments to the appearance, but there are basically no adjustments in interior decoration and power, and whether the new Passat can change the status quo remains to be tested.
