It is decided that from now on, some imported 1-Series, 2-Series, 3-Series, 4-Series, 5-Series, X1, X3, X4, X5, X5M, X6 and X6 Active Hybrid vehicles produced during the period from February 17, 2005 to August 27, 2017 will be recalled, with a total of 8097 vehicles. It is worth noting that almost all of the above models involve imported models sold by BMW in China.

The airbags of the vehicles within the scope of this recall are equipped with gas generators containing ammonium nitrate (with and without desiccant) produced by Takata. The gas generating agent is imperfect in moistureproof, and the gas generating agent may deteriorate under the influence of repeated changes in temperature and humidity. In the process of opening the airbag, the pressure may be too high inside the gas generator, and the gas generator may be abnormally damaged, resulting in debris flying out, injuring the people in the car, and there are hidden dangers. BMW (China) Automobile Trading Co., Ltd. will replace the airbag gas generators in the parts of the recalled vehicles free of charge to eliminate safety risks.

When it comes to Takata airbags, I believe many car owners are no stranger, because the car brands recalled due to Takata airbag problems are not in a small number. It can be said that the recall caused by Takata airbags is the largest safety recall in the automobile industry. It is understood that the Takata airbag recall began in 2008, involving 19 car manufacturers. The main reason for the recall is that Takata airbag contains ammonium nitrate, which will become extremely unstable if exposed to high temperature and humidity for a long time, resulting in hidden dangers such as explosion and flying out of metal fragments after bursting, resulting in casualties. In the Chinese market, there are not a few recalls caused by Takata airbags, including Toyota, Honda, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, Lexus and so on. In other words, all car brands carrying Takata airbags are not immune from the recall.

The airbag incident in Takata, Japan, which broke out in 2015, is the largest automobile safety recall in North America. After several years, the Takata airbag incident is still not quelled, and even there are still frequent fatal incidents. The Takata airbag triggered the largest recall in global automobile history. Although the incident really broke out in 2015, there have been hidden dangers in Takata airbags for 15 years. The main problem lies in the airbag booster pump, which is easy to decompose and explode under certain circumstances, and metal fragments will be spattered to hurt the driver when unfolding. Toyota recalled 1.7 million vehicles worldwide in 2019, also because of safety risks in airbags that could harm passengers.

The Takata airbag incident not only caused the largest recall in the history of the automobile industry, but also directly led to the bankruptcy of Takata. It is understood that Takata airbag manufacturer Takata Company of Japan was founded in 1933, mainly engaged in the research and development of automotive safety systems and devices, including automotive airbags, steering wheels, seat belts and airbag gas generators, child safety seats, etc., and was once one of the world's well-known suppliers of automotive safety systems. In June 2017, Takata filed for bankruptcy due to product safety issues, and Junsheng Electronics subsequently acquired it. On April 12, 2018, the subsidiary Gusheng Security Systems (JSS) successfully settled its acquisition of Takata assets in Japan at a price of US $1.588 billion. Although Takata went bankrupt, Takata once occupied 20% of the global airbag market, the problem of its airbag production has not been solved, and it has been recalled many times at home and abroad for the problem of Takata airbag. At present, there are still many cars deeply troubled by its safety.
