According to the latest data released by SAIC on August 6, production and sales in June 2021 were 344610 and 352546 respectively, down 27.39% and 22.95% respectively from a year earlier, with cumulative production and sales of 2683868 and 2649831 vehicles respectively from January to July, up 8.80% and 5.71% respectively from a year earlier.

Generally speaking, the data released by automobile companies are wholesale sales data, that is, the wholesale data from manufacturers to brand dealers. Generally speaking, wholesale sales data can not directly reflect the performance of the end market, but they can also reflect some conditions of the car company. For example, when car companies are affected by the epidemic and chip shortages, their production and sales will decline sharply.

In terms of monthly sales, SAIC's brands almost fell, and production and sales declined significantly compared with the same period last year. Data show that SAIC-Volkswagen production and sales in July were 72145 and 70001 respectively, down 52.63% and 47.76% respectively from a year earlier.

This is the second month in a row that SAIC Volkswagen has halved its production and sales, which is largely due to a shortage of chips. SAIC-Volkswagen has limited production capacity because of chip shortages, so it can only temporarily supply limited chips to higher-profit models, such as Santana, POLO, Tu'eng and so on. In addition, compared with SAIC GM's Cadillac luxury brand, Audi brand in the luxury market has not yet formed a sales layout, while sales of low-end brand Skoda are low, and mainstream brand Volkswagen is affected by the chip crisis. SAIC Volkswagen's performance is not optimistic in a short time. However, compared with June production and sales, SAIC Volkswagen's production and sales rose slightly in July, which means SAIC Volkswagen is gradually less affected by the shortage of chips.

The same is true of SAIC GM, with production and sales of 85335 and 90017 vehicles respectively in July, down 26.26% and 20.17% respectively from a year earlier. From the data point of view, SAIC GM is also affected by the shortage of chips, production and sales have dropped sharply, but compared with SAIC Volkswagen, SAIC GM performed better, both production and sales are higher than SAIC Volkswagen. However, in the long run, if SAIC GM is affected by chips for a long time, it is only a matter of time before cumulative sales decline.

According to the data, SAIC GM Wuling is currently SAIC's largest brand in production and sales, with production and sales of 105056 and 110000 vehicles respectively in July, but down 19.98 per cent and 15.38 per cent respectively compared with the same period last year. Of course, although the production and sales volume of SAIC GM Wuling is higher than that of SAIC GM and SAIC Volkswagen, SAIC GM Wuling models have low profit margins and basically focus on performance-to-price ratio, so even if production and sales are high, but SAIC GM Wuling's profit performance is not optimistic.

Since the beginning of this year, the shortage of semiconductor chips has constantly plagued the world's major automobile manufacturers, and many car companies will have a negative impact on automobile production and marketing because of the shortage of semiconductor chips. Recently, FAW Toyota, Guangzhou Automobile Toyota, Dongfeng Honda and other car companies have been exposed that some production lines have been temporarily suspended because of the chip shortage crisis.

Why the shortage of chips is serious: first, it is affected by force majeure such as COVID-19 epidemic; second, the rapid recovery of the automobile industry. China is the first country to recover from the epidemic, and China is the world's largest automobile market, most semiconductor chips need to be imported from overseas, but the development momentum of the overseas epidemic is still not optimistic, resulting in a serious shortage of chips. Third, the whole industry is affected by the shortage of chips. it is not only automotive chips, but the rapid development of consumer electronics products makes the demand for chips in the consumer electronics field also soar. In the case of limited production capacity, because of its high profits, it has seized the production capacity of automotive chips, resulting in a lower quota for the production of automotive chips.

In the short term, the shortage of chips will continue to affect the automotive industry. Although domestic chips are being laid out continuously, it is impossible to achieve full replacement in a short time. It takes a lot of time for domestic chips to replace imported chips. In the future, the production of domestic automobile industry and the layout of domestic chips will face great challenges.
