The latest report released by the Federation of passengers showed that retail sales of narrow passenger cars in July 2021 were 1.5 million, down 6.2% from a year earlier, and cumulative sales from January to July in 2021 were 11.445 million, an increase of 22.9% over the same period last year.
Judging from the retail sales data of narrow passenger car manufacturers released by the Federation of passengers, sales of many car companies in the top 15 rankings have declined to varying degrees, especially mainstream automakers such as FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC-Volkswagen, SAIC-GM, Dongfeng Nissan, and so on.
Judging from the list, the top three car companies are still FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC General Motors and SAIC Volkswagen, with sales of 112000, 110000 and 100000 respectively, with a market share of 7.5%, 7.3% and 6.7%, respectively. All three car companies fell sharply this month, with FAW-Volkswagen falling by 36.6%, while SAIC-Volkswagen and SAIC-GM fell by 19.8% and 14.4%, respectively.
In addition to the above three automakers, Dongfeng Nissan's performance this month was not optimistic, with retail sales falling 19.0% in June and 20.3% in July. At present, the new generation of Dongfeng Nissan Qijun has been listed, with a price range of 181900 yuan to 262900 yuan. The biggest highlight of the new generation Qijun is equipped with a 1.5T variable compression ratio three-cylinder engine, which is actually impeccable, with a maximum power of 204 horsepower, a maximum torque of 300 Nm, and a parameter performance that is not afraid of any 1.5T engine on the Chinese market, whether independent or joint venture. However, at present, domestic consumers are particularly sensitive to the three-cylinder engine, and both Buick and Ford have stumbled on the three-cylinder engine, although the engine is excellent, but if consumers do not pay the bill, then the best technology will not help.
Compared with joint venture brands, independent brands performed better, with the exception of Geely Motor, other independent brands achieved growth. Geely is the only independent brand in the top 15 list, with sales falling 8.4 per cent in July from a year earlier to 92000 vehicles, and cumulative revenue and sales up 9.4 per cent to 669000 vehicles from January to July, but its market performance was significantly lower than expected. At present, Geely is speeding up the layout of new products. On July 20, Geely Xingyue L was officially listed with a price of 13.72-188200 yuan. Official figures show that Xingyue L sold 6059 units in July, and more than 5000 units have been sold in only more than ten days on the market, which is still very gratifying. In addition, the fourth generation of Geely Dihao will also be listed in the near future, after announcing a pre-sale guidance price range of 870-92000 yuan.
BYD continued to grow strongly, with sales of 58000 vehicles in July, up 93.5% from a year earlier, the biggest increase on the list. BYD was able to squeeze into the list mainly due to the growth of new energy vehicle sales, which continued this month after it successfully overtook Tesla to become the highest selling new energy vehicle company in China in June. BYD Qin PLUS DM-i, BYD Song DM, BYD Han EV, BYD Qin PLUS EV, BYD Yuan EV and other models squeezed into the New Energy list, of which BYD Qin PLUS DM-i sales reached 9127, second only to Hongguang MINIEV.
In terms of other independent brands, SAIC GM Wuling sold 69500 vehicles in July, Great Wall 66800 and Chery 48900, all of which grew by more than double digits, with Chery returning to the list, up 35.4 per cent year-on-year.
In terms of Japanese brands, Honda is not optimistic. Toyota's joint ventures in China, FAW Toyota and Guangzhou Auto Toyota, sold 72000 and 71000 vehicles respectively, a normal market performance. Dongfeng Honda and Guangzhou Auto Honda both fell out of the top 10, with Guangzhou Honda falling 10.0% year-on-year to 62200 vehicles and Dongfeng Honda falling 31.6% to 46100 vehicles. The sharp decline in Honda sales, especially Dongfeng Honda, is mainly related to the tight supply of spare parts and the prevention and control of the epidemic. According to related reports, in order to cooperate with the local epidemic prevention work, the company has suspended production at its joint venture Dongfeng Honda's three Wuhan plants since August 3.
In terms of luxury brands, brilliance BMW and Beijing Mercedes-Benz performed mediocre, with Beijing Mercedes-Benz falling out of the top 15. Brilliance BMW sales in July were 58000, down 13.4% from a year earlier. Beijing Mercedes-Benz fell off the list. Based on a cumulative sales of 376000 vehicles from January to July, it can be calculated that Beijing Mercedes-Benz sales in July were 34700, down 25.02% from a year earlier.
The Federation said that the sharp drop in wholesale sales led to the transmission of unfavorable factors such as uneven entry and exit of joint venture car dealers, matching of order demand and imbalance of existing inventory to retail terminals, resulting in weak retail sales. In addition, sporadic outbreaks in July also contributed to the pace of sales in some areas. According to the market outlook in August, with the continuation of epidemic prevention and control, passenger car travel has also become a guarantee of travel safety. The antitrust investigation on chips carried out by the relevant state departments is conducive to improving the order of chip supply, accumulating the delivery of retail orders, and the wholesale increment of the inventory cycle from August to October. If uncertain factors such as the overseas epidemic improve, the production of car companies will strengthen significantly, and the growth of new products suppressed in the early stage will also push the car market to strengthen in August.
