AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)10/09 Report--

According to foreign media reports, due to the shortage of chips, Ford, Skoda, Nissan and Volkswagen also announced plans to reduce production. Specifically, Ford will suspend production at a Mexican plant from October 11 to 12; production at the Skoda Czech plant will be slashed or even suspended from October 18 to the end of this year; Nissan's two Mexican plants will be suspended for 11 days and 8 days respectively in October; and Volkswagen will suspend production at a Mexican plant from October 6 to 15. For the suspension of production Nissan said: "We will continue to adjust the production process and strive to minimize the impact of this production cut on the local and global auto industry." Efforts are being made to resume production and deliver the car to distributors and customers as soon as possible. On the other hand, Skoda spokesman Tomas Kotera said that the company hopes to deliver the nearly completed car to customers as soon as possible. It is understood that Skoda has been delivering new cars locally for several months. At the same time, the Czech Association of Automobile Manufacturers said that due to the suspension of Skoda, total Czech car production this year should be equal to 1.15 million in 2020. Previously, the association expected to produce 1.3 million cars this year.

It is worth noting that Volkswagen has stopped production several times because of a lack of cores, while the Mexican plant that stopped production mainly produces Jetta models. As early as the end of last year, the production lines of some models of the two Volkswagen joint ventures FAW-Volkswagen and SAIC-Volkswagen had been suspended due to the influence of the supply of chips and other parts. Volkswagen later said that the impact of the suspension of production due to chips was small, but in 2021, Stephan Wollenstein, China CEO of Volkswagen Group, said that the company lost tens of thousands of vehicles in China in December as global chip supply shortages affected its production. At the beginning of this year, a number of SAIC-Volkswagen models were temporarily suspended. In order to ensure the stable development of the market, SAIC-Volkswagen said that it will optimize production scheduling according to market demand, giving priority to the production capacity of products with high demand. The Federation of passengers has also issued an article saying that since the end of last year, the issue of automotive chips has attracted a lot of attention, but the overall pressure is not great. Insufficient production of domestic passenger cars does not mean direct market losses. However, as more and more domestic car companies stop production, it means that the chip shortage is also somewhat more than expected.

Of course, affected by the chip shortage is not only these four car companies, Volvo, GM, Toyota, Honda, and other car companies have also suspended the production plans of some factories due to lack of core. The global shortage of automotive chips has had a serious impact on many automobile manufacturers. On January 7, Honda announced that it would cut production by 4000 vehicles in January due to a shortage of semiconductor chips in its vehicle control system. On January 8, Toyota announced that it would reduce production of its Tentu pickup truck at its Texas assembly plant by about 40%. On January 11, Ford announced that it would suspend production at its manufacturing plant in Louisville, Kentucky, for a week due to shortages of chips and related parts, and that Ford Richie and Lincoln adventurers would suspend production. On Sept. 3, GM announced that it would suspend operations at most North American plants due to global chip shortages and would make further adjustments in line with the progress of the supply chain. On September 20, Toyota announced that a total of 27 production lines at 14 factories in Japan would cease operation in October due to a lack of cores. In addition, the new domestic car-building forces have also reduced the delivery volume of vehicles. Ideal Motors announced on its website on Sept. 20 that it adjusted its delivery forecast for the third quarter of 2021 to 24500 vehicles due to a weaker-than-expected recovery of chip supply, down from the previous forecast of 25000-26000 vehicles. Xilai also adjusted its delivery outlook for the third quarter of 2021 to 22500 to 23500 vehicles.

It is not difficult to see that the global shortage of automotive chips has dealt a heavy blow to many carmakers in the past few months. According to research by AlixPartners, the global shortage of semiconductor chips will continue to cause serious damage to the automotive business, with a total revenue loss of no less than $210 billion in 2021. In the short term, the shortage of chips will continue to affect the auto industry.
