Retail sales of luxury cars in October were 180000, down 27 per cent from a year earlier and 11 per cent month-on-month, but up 1 per cent from October 2019, according to the latest figures from the Federation of passengers. The Federation said that luxury cars continue to maintain structural stability, reflecting the high-end demand for consumer upgrading is still strong, the impact of competition is not significant.

Judging from the luxury car market sales data released by the Federation in October, BBA is still the driving force in the luxury car market, especially in the car sector, where 6 of the 10 cars are from BBA, and the market position is unshakable. The BMW 5-Series once again topped the list of high-end cars in October, with sales up 16.6 per cent year-on-year to 13805, making it into the top 15, while Mercedes-Benz E-Class retail sales rose 13.6 per cent year-on-year to 13787 in October, the only two of the BBA cars to grow. However, Audi A6L's performance is not optimistic, plunging 68.5% year-on-year, only 5247 vehicles sold, we can see that the chip shortage has a great impact on the Audi brand. In addition, the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4L all fell by more than 30%, with Mercedes-Benz C-Class falling the most. It seems that Beijing Mercedes-Benz has supplied more limited chips to the more profitable Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

After the BBA, Hongqi H9 ranked seventh in high-end car sales, with sales of 4006 vehicles in October, up 90.5% from a year earlier, ahead of the Volvo S90 and Cadillac CT6, or even more than the two models combined. According to data inquiries, in fact, the highest-selling model of the Cadillac brand is the CT5, with 5665 vehicles, while the S60 is the highest-selling Volvo sedan, but it is not included in the list because the price is less than 300000 yuan. Of course, we found that E-QM5 from Red Flag also appeared on the list. The new car was officially launched in June this year, with three models, namely, the flag-sharing version, Didi version and T3 version, all priced at 239800 yuan. According to Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the Federation of passengers, new energy vehicles priced above 200000 yuan will also be classified as "new luxury", and Red Flag E-QM5 may appear on the list.

Let's take a look at the high-end SUV list. Tesla Model Y once again won the top of the high-end SUV list in October, but the decline is not small compared with September, mainly because most of Tesla's production capacity was used for export in October, resulting in large fluctuations in the sales of Model 3 and Model Y.

Mercedes-Benz GLC and BMW X3 ranked second and third, respectively, with sales of more than 10, 000 vehicles, 12620 and 11243 respectively, down 10.7% and 21.7% respectively from a year earlier. Audi Q5L sold 9966 vehicles in October, down 30.7% from a year earlier, but all three models increased month-on-month from September, mainly due to the easing of chip shortages.

Ideal ONE, from the new power of car building, continued to grow strongly, with sales of 7649 vehicles in October, up 107.2 per cent from a year earlier. Lulai ES6, also known as the "new power of car building", performed relatively well, with October sales of just 2528 vehicles, down 6.2 per cent from a year earlier. Of course, this has something to do with the transformation of the Jianghuai NIO production line, which delivered only 3667 cars in October. In addition, Cadillac XT5, Volvo XC60 and Cadillac XT6 all declined to varying degrees.

In the list of high-end models published by the HKIFA (models worth more than 300000 yuan are regarded as high-end), most of the luxury market share is still occupied by the BBA brand, but under the influence of the shortage of chips, the decline is very obvious, while Hongqi H9, Tesla Model Y, ideal ONE, Lulai ES6 and other models continue to appear in the list. Overall, although the performance of the luxury car market increased in October compared with September, many models still showed a sharp decline compared with the same period last year, and the market is still not optimistic.
