Recall models:

Brilliance BMW Co., Ltd. decided to recall some of the brilliance BMW 318i, 320i and 325i vehicles manufactured between March 18, 2010 and February 24, 2012, totaling 39153 vehicles.

BMW (China) Automobile Trading Co., Ltd. decided to recall some imported BMW 116i, 118i, 120i, 318i, 320i, 325i and 330i vehicles produced from August 30, 2007 to August 27, 2013, totaling 33694.

Reasons for recall:

The description of "the maximum depth of wading is 30 cm" in the vehicle user manual within the scope of this recall is incorrect. Because the torque sensor shell of the electric steering gear (EPS) is 28cm from the ground under full load, if the vehicle drives many times in a wading environment beyond the design permission of the electric steering gear (EPS) (the wading depth exceeds 25cm and the speed exceeds the walking speed 5km/h), the tightness of the torque sensor may be affected, resulting in water intake damage and ultimately the loss of steering power function. Increase the risk of vehicle accidents, there are hidden dangers.

Solution:

Brilliance BMW Motor Co., Ltd. and BMW (China) Automobile Trading Co., Ltd. will check the electric steering gear (EPS) for vehicles within the scope of the recall free of charge, and replace the electric steering gear (EPS) damaged by water intake due to this recall, in order to eliminate safety risks. At the same time, the water-related instructions in the user manual will be revised free of charge for vehicles within the scope of the recall. Its content is: the maximum wading depth of the car is 25 cm (about equal to the height of the lowest bolt fixing hole on the rim). When driving in this depth of water, the speed should not exceed the walking speed (5km/h), otherwise the engine, electrical system and gearbox may be damaged.

Emergency measures:

Users should avoid driving on stagnant roads where the water depth exceeds 25cm; when driving on flooded roads with water depth of 25cm, the speed should not exceed walking speed (5km/h).

It is worth mentioning that the recall was carried out in the context of the defect investigation initiated by the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration. Affected by the investigation, brilliance BMW Co., Ltd. and BMW (China) Automobile Trading Co., Ltd. decided to take recall measures to eliminate safety risks.

In September this year, BMW (China) Automobile Trading Co., Ltd. filed a recall plan with the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration because of a fuel tank leak. the recalled models include some imported BMW 116i, 118i, 120i, 125i, 218i, 220i, 320i, 325i, 328i, 330i, 340i, 420i, 428i, 430i, 435i, 440i, M135i, M2, M235i, M3, M4 and ActiveHybrid 3 vehicles produced between September 7, 2011 and April 30, 2016. A total of 142754 vehicles.

In August this year, BMW (China) Automobile Trading Co., Ltd. also filed a recall plan with the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration because of defects in Takata airbags. The recalled models include some imported BMW 1-Series, 2-Series, 3-Series, 4-Series, 5-Series, X1, X3, X4, X5, X5M, X6, X6 Active Hybrid vehicles manufactured during the period from February 17, 2005 to August 27, 2017, a total of 8097 vehicles. Almost all of BMW's imported models are sold in China.

In May this year, the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration announced that brilliance BMW Co., Ltd. will recall a total of 6636 domestic iX3 electric vehicles from September 1, 2020 to April 30, 2021 due to design problems in the software of the battery control units within the recall scope.

To sum up, the reasons for the vehicle defects recalled by BMW this year include water depth of less than 25 cm, fuel tank leakage, Takata airbag safety problems, design problems in the software of the battery control unit, and so on. The car recall reflects the safety risks of existing defects in product development, and also means that manufacturers have a responsible attitude towards products and consumers, but frequent vehicle recalls will make users lose information about brand products.
