In addition, the newly declared Model 3 and Model Y are equipped with a vehicle incident data recording system (EDR) and optional ETC on-board devices. EDR, whose full name is Event Data Recorder, is used to record the key operation data (including speed, ABS status, seat belt status, etc.) of the vehicle in the three stages before, during and after the collision. In other words, EDR is equivalent to a "black box", and its recorded information can be used to reproduce the accident process and be used in automobile accident analysis. Of course, some netizens are worried about the invasion of their privacy, but generally speaking, EDR only involves the recording and extraction of data, and generally there is no domestic country where audio or video is recorded.

According to the revised list No. 2 of the National Standard "Technical conditions for Motor vehicle Operation Safety", it is required that from January 1, 2022, newly produced passenger cars should be equipped with "automobile black box" EDR system, that is, driving incident recorder. It is understood that the equipment can completely and accurately record the relevant situation of the vehicle driving state, can fully record the vehicle driving track, and reproduce it on the computer through special software.

The mandatory installation of EDR is a positive side for both users and automakers, especially in the new energy vehicle market. At present, although the domestic automobile market is still dominated by fuel vehicles, more and more electric vehicles will pour into the market in the future, especially under the background that automobile manufacturers put more emphasis on intelligence, when the vehicle has an accident, it is difficult to make a clear judgment whether it is caused by human or product causes, but when the vehicle is equipped with EDR, it is obviously easier to distinguish the responsibility of the accident. Prior to this, several accidents that occurred in China by Tesla were finally provided by Tesla with EDR data to try to solve the problem. Of course, in this process, Tesla was also questioned about the incompleteness and authenticity of EDR data. As a result, there are still car owners defending their rights for this half a year. Therefore, the layout of EDR can determine the responsibility of the accident more quickly, but how to interpret the EDR data needs a breakthrough. According to the latest new car declaration released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, many electric vehicles are already equipped with EDR, such as brilliance BMW i3, BYD Song PLUS DM-i, etc., while car companies have been equipped with EDR in the new car declaration as early as September, and this layout will continue to accelerate in the future.
