AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)01/28 Report--
On January 28, Toyota released production and sales figures for December 2021 and the whole year of 2021. Data show that Toyota's global sales in December 2021 were 933260 vehicles, down 5.5 percent from the same period last year, and global production increased to 801100 vehicles, an increase of 6 percent year-on-year, a record high, with overseas production of 540000 vehicles and a reduction of 22000 vehicles in Japan's domestic market of only 260000 vehicles. Due to the impact of the epidemic and chip shortages, six factories in Japan's local market have been shut down.
In addition, Toyota also released the production and sales results from January to December 2021. Toyota's total global vehicle sales were 10.5 million vehicles (including those of its subsidiaries Daihatsu Daihatsu Motors and Hino Hino Motors), an increase of 10% over the previous year. It is worth noting that the group's overall car sales increased by 10.1% last year, making it the world's largest automaker for two consecutive years. The figure also surpassed that of Germany's Volkswagen, which sold 8.9 million vehicles in the same period, down 5% from 2020 and the lowest in a decade.
Although Toyota's global sales reached 10.4955 million, of which 2.109 million were sold in the Japanese domestic market, down 2.2% from a year earlier, it was the only real car to decline. Fortunately, sales in overseas markets performed better, with cumulative sales of 8.387 million vehicles in 2021, an increase of 13.8 per cent.
Especially in the Chinese market, compared with Honda and Nissan, Toyota has become the only Japanese brand to achieve growth. Data show that Toyota sold 1.944 million new cars in China in 2021, an increase of 8.2% over the same period last year and a record high for the ninth year in a row. Among them, FAW Toyota sold 860019 new cars, up 8% from the same period last year, while Guangzhou Auto Toyota sold 840396 vehicles, up 11% from the same period last year. In addition, more than 240000 vehicles are mainly from Lexus and imported models.
2021 is the year of Toyota products, and there will be a brand new model on the market in almost two months. On April 10, FAW Toyota Asia Lion went public. On June 6, GAC Toyota Ling Shang went public. On June 25, GAC Toyota's brand-new generation of Hanlanda went public, realizing the sale of new and old people in the same house. On August 27, FAW Toyota Crown-Lu Fang went public. On October 30, GAC Toyota Sina went public. On November 18, FAW Toyota Lingfang went public. In addition, GAC Toyota Feng Landa has been listed on January 6, 2022, FAW Toyota Corolla Ruifang will be listed on January 10, Guangzhou Auto Toyota Weisa and other models will also be on the market one after another.
More importantly, Toyota released its electric car strategy. On December 14th, a Toyota launch shocked the industry. On the same day, Toyota displayed 17 pure electric vehicles and released a series of strategic target data at the same time. Toyota proposes that Toyota new energy vehicles will account for 75% of total sales in 2030, strive to sell 3.5 million vehicles a year, invest 4 trillion yen (224 billion yuan) in pure electric in 2030, and launch 30 new pure electric vehicles by 2030. In addition, Lexus will become a pure electric brand, achieving 100% pure electric in Europe, North America and China, and the goal will be extended to the world by 2035.
Affected by the epidemic and lack of core, Toyota was caught in an uphill battle in the second half of the year. Toyota said that due to the continued spread of the COVID-19 epidemic in Southeast Asia and a shortage of auto parts, Toyota's global sales in December 2021 were lower than the previous year's level, but from January to December in 2021, Toyota's global production and sales exceeded the previous year's level, with some relief compared with 2020.
Affected by the epidemic, Toyota announced that global production in November 2021 would be reduced from 10 to 150000 vehicles to 1 million vehicles, and a total of six production lines at four factories in Japan would stop production. On November 12 of the same year, Toyota said 28 production lines at 14 plants were operating normally for the first time since May and planned to produce 800000 vehicles worldwide in December.
On January 18 this year, Japan's Toyota announced that it would suspend production of 11 production lines at eight factories in Japan, including the Wancho factory in Aichi Prefecture, in February this year. In view of the epidemic and the global shortage of semiconductors, Toyota said it expected to reduce production of new cars at home and abroad by about 150000 vehicles in February than planned, with global production of about 700000 vehicles, compared with December 15 last year. Toyota announced its plan to produce 800000 vehicles worldwide in January 2022, when Toyota stressed that the target of 9 million vehicles in fiscal year 2021 (April 2021-March 2022) would remain unchanged, and that the previous shutdown would not affect the annual production target of 9 million vehicles. However, in the past month alone, Toyota's production plans have been affected on a large scale. Toyota's suspension of production at 11 production lines at eight factories in Japan in February will directly lead to global sales of about 700000 vehicles in February, and its sales target for fiscal year 2021 (April 2021-March 2022) will also be lower than the previously announced forecast of 9 million vehicles.
In response to this year's production plan, Toyota said: due to the continued spread in Southeast Asia and chip supply exceeds demand and other factors continue, it is difficult to predict production this year, but Toyota pointed out that the impact will be minimized.
