According to the global new energy brand sales data released by the cleantechnica website in 2021, global new energy model sales in 2021 totaled nearly 6.5 million, an increase of 108% over the same period last year, of which 4.7634 million were sold by the TOP20 brand, accounting for 73.3% of the global sales.

Specifically, in the global new energy brand sales list TOP20 in 2021, there are 8 Chinese brands, 4 German brands, 3 European brands, 2 American brands, 2 Korean brands and 1 Japanese brand. Compared with the previous year, the sales of new energy passenger vehicles in 2021 increased by 108%, which is also the highest annual growth rate since 2012. the market size of new energy passenger vehicles in 2021 is close to 6.5 million, with a market share of 9%. The growth rate of pure electric vehicles is obviously different from that of plug-in hybrid vehicles, including 320810 pure electric vehicles and 272935 DM plug-in hybrid vehicles. Sales of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids rose 69% and 31%, respectively, compared with the same period last year. In addition, hybrid vehicles grew by 9%.

Among them, 8 Chinese brands are BYD, SAIC, SAIC passenger cars, Great Wall Euler, GAC Euan, Chery Group, Xiaopeng Automobile and Changan Automobile.

BYD ranked second with sales of 593900 vehicles, with a year-on-year growth of more than 220 per cent and a global market share of 9.1 per cent. SAIC ranked third with sales of 456100 vehicles.

SAIC passenger cars ranked seventh with sales of 227000 vehicles.

Great Wall Euler ranked 12th with sales of 137400 vehicles.

GAC Ean ranked 14th with sales of 125400 vehicles.

Chery Group ranked 18th with sales of 99100 vehicles.

Xiaopeng ranked 19th with sales of 98600 vehicles. Xiaopeng P7 sales reached an all-time high and entered the top 20 of the year for the first time.

Changan Automobile ranked 20th with sales of 97900 vehicles.

According to relevant data, these eight brands account for 28.23% of global new energy sales in 2021. It can be said that China has propped up half of the world's new energy vehicles.

In terms of model sales performance, Tesla Model 3 sold more than 500000 vehicles in the whole year, ranking first and becoming the best-selling pure electric model for four years in a row, while Wuling New Energy sold 452238 vehicles, an increase of 160% over the same period last year, of which Hongguang MINI EV ranked second with annual sales of 426452 vehicles, while Tesla Model Y ranked third with annual sales of more than 410000 vehicles. The fourth to tenth places are Volkswagen ID.4, BYD Qin PLUS DM-i, ideal ONE, BYD Han EV, BYD Song Pro/PLUS DM-i, Chang'an Mercedes-Benz E-star, Volkswagen ID.3, of which Biya Dihan sold 117665 vehicles in the whole year; BYD Tang family, 54204; BYD Song family, 200870; BYD Qin family, 194220; BYD Yuan family, 41402; BYD e series 38360; BYD dolphin 29598.

In terms of market share, Tesla is far ahead with 14.4%. It is the only car company in the world with a market share of more than 10%. It is also the fourth year in a row that Tesla has become the leader in global sales of new energy passenger cars after 2018, but Tesla's global market share has been declining since 2019, 12% in 2018, 17% in 2019, 16% in 2020 and 14% in 2021.

In addition, relevant data show that the brands with annual sales of more than 300000 vehicles are SAIC and Volkswagen respectively, with a global market share of 7.0% and 4.9% respectively, which is still a big gap compared with Tesla and BYD. The brands with annual sales of more than 200000 vehicles are BMW, Mercedes and SAIC passenger cars, with a global market share of 4.2 per cent, 3.5 per cent and 3.5 per cent, respectively. The brands with annual sales of more than 100000 vehicles are Volvo, Audi, Hyundai, Kia, Great Wall Euler, Renault, Guangzhou Automobile, Mark, Toyota and Ford, with a market share of between 1.7 and 2.6 per cent. Chery, Xiaopeng and Chang'an sell about 100000 vehicles a year, with a market share of about 1.5 per cent.

In addition, in 2021, China ranked first in selling 2.9398 million new energy passenger vehicles, accounting for 45% of the global new energy passenger vehicle market. Overall, the sales performance of new energy vehicles in the Chinese market is relatively outstanding.
