AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)02/27 Report--

The American Highway Safety Insurance Association (IIHS) conducts crash safety tests on new cars sold in the United States every year and gives corresponding safety ratings. Recently, IIHS released a list of TOP Safety Picks (best safety) and Top Safety Picks Plus+ (best safety plus) models in 2022, including 36 TOP Safety Picks models and 65 Top Safety Picks Plus+ models.

It is understood that in order to win the title of Top Safety Picks Plus+, the model must get a "G" rating in all collision projects. In addition, you also need to get an "A" rating or above in active safety and headlight testing. Unlike TOP Safety Picks Plus+, Top Safety Pick does not specify headlight tests, but all crash projects also need to receive a "G" rating. Officials say 65 models have won TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards this year, up from 49 last year, because more models have improved lighting.

This year's Top Safety Picks Plus+ is mainly won by Japanese brands, mainly because of the large proportion of Japanese test models, including Honda Civic / Accord, Mazda 3/CX-5, Toyota Camry / Sienna/ Hanlanda, Subaru Lion, Acura TLX, Lexus ES, Mitsubishi Olander and so on.

Korean Hyundai Motor Group became the biggest winner, including Hyundai, Kia and Genisse, with a total of 21 models on the list, of which 11 won the Top Safety Picks Plus+, of Hyundai Tucson, Palisade, Santa Fe, Nexo; K5, Stinger; G70, G80, G90, GV70 and GV80. Hyundai Motor Group has more and more sense of existence in the domestic market, but it is still very popular in overseas markets. According to the data, Hyundai sold 3.891 million vehicles worldwide in 2021, an increase of 3.9% over the same period last year. Together with Kia's market sales, Hyundai Motor Group ranks fourth in the global market, second only to Toyota, Volkswagen and Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, but its performance in China is very weak, declining year-on-year for four consecutive years.

2022 Toyota Sienna Minivan

Only six American models appear on the list, namely, Tesla Model 3/Model Y, Ford Bronco, Ford Explorer, Cadillac XT6 and Chrysler Pacifica, which are more than those on the list last year, reflecting a certain improvement in safety performance of American models. Compared with American models, European models are all taken over by Volvo, including S60, V60, XC60, XC40, XC90 and other models have won the title of Top Safety Picks Plus+. Volvo, as the representative of "the safest car in the world", can be said to be well-deserved. As for German, mainly for Audi and Mercedes-Benz, including Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi A6, Audi A7, etc., while Volkswagen only ID.3 entered the list, BMW and other German brands did not get the title of Top Safety Picks Plus+.

Let's take a look at the list of Top Safety Picks models. The models on the list are also concentrated in Japanese and Korean brands. Japanese models, Nissan Sentra (domestic Xuanyi), Honda CR-V, Toyota C-HR/Avalon (domestic Asian dragon), Lexus UX/RX and so on, are basically the best-selling models in the market. Korean models on the list are higher than Japanese models, Hyundai's Elantra and Sonata, and Kia's Forte, Seltos, Sorento, Soul, Sportage, Carnival (domestic Jiahua), but most of the models are not sold in China. In terms of American models, GM's Buick Encore GX (domestic Ankora GX), Ford's Mustang Mach-E, Escape, and Flyle 150J FCA's Dodge Ram 1500, compared with Ford's more models on the list, while the FCA has only one, GM has no models on the list.

2021 Lexus UX 4-door SUV

Focus on German models, three German luxury brands BBA are on the list, including BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, Audi Q8, Audi A5 Sportback, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Mercedes-Benz Sportback. As for the Volkswagen brand, which ranks second in the world, not a single model is on the list. In other words, it's hard to believe that Volkswagen has only one model on the list, whether it's Top Safety Picks or Top Safety Picks Plus +.

As far as individual manufacturers are concerned, Hyundai Motor Group is the biggest "winner". A total of 21 models, including Hyundai, Kia and Genisse brands, have won the title, breaking consumers' inherent impression of Korean models, but it is also limited to the US market. Volvo's performance is also quite eye-catching, with nine models winning Top Safety Picks Plus +, which can be said to be well-deserved. In the domestic C-IASI or C-NCAP, the safety factor of Volvo models is relatively high. As American brands, Ford, GM and FCA have very few models on the list and their performance is very mediocre.

IIHS vs. NHTSA barrier height

IIHS is one of the most stringent safety crash tests in the world, conducting systematic and professional crash tests every year in Europe and America, and providing consumers with a crash safety index for new cars. The number of models awarded the title in 2021 is significantly higher than that in the same period, which reflects that manufacturers attach importance to the safety performance of models and improve them. It should be noted that the models tested by IIHS are American models, and the safety of these products is not the same as that of domestic versions, so their safety ratings are for reference only. In China, collision agencies mainly include China Insurance Research and China Automotive Research. By contrast, the test results of China Insurance Research are easier to recognize, but they also test fewer models in 2021 and keep a lower profile than in the past.

On October 28, 2021, China Insurance Research announced the results of the first batch of vehicle crashes in 2021, namely Ford Ruiji, Mazda CX-30, Volkswagen ID.4X, Changan UNI-K, Guangzhou Auto Acura RDX,5 models are all SUV, of which Volkswagen ID.4X, as a pure electric vehicle, has become the best collision performance model, and all projects have won G (excellent).
